I found a cicada today that had to top the scales at around 10 pounds, at least that is what it felt like at 60 mph on the Rocket, right between the eyes. From now on, a shield or full face helmet until the little red eyed bastards are gone.

Remember years ago I bloke I was riding with had a Christmas beetle ( a bigish sized beetle) hit him in the eye at highway pace .. also no sunnies or faceshield. Didn't kill it and it ended up under his eyelid .. you could see it crawling around trying to find a way out. Mate was all for the beetle finding it's way out as well :p .. it was causing him a lot of pain. Took a long slow ride to the hospital to have it removed.

In 2008 we were inundated with those bugs here on the Cape. It was like chinese water torture listening to them for weeks. They were pretty destuctive to the trees in the area a lot of which were destroyed because of them.

Look on the bright side it could have been worse...;)

My old fat black cat has gained about 5 lbs in the past 2 weeks. He loves the little bastards. Just this evening he's brought 4 into the house as presents. We find little parts all over the floor.

Rode thru a locust swarm a couple of years back in central Queensland, north of Winton. Could see the huge black cloud ahead, didn't know what it was. Soon found out.

Decided to continue very slowly thru it, 10 mph stuff, would have had to wait days for them to pass by otherwise.....more worried about the radiator clogging than anything, did the jacket up tight around the neck, visor down of course. At that speed they were just bouncing, not splatting. Bike didn't get hot, weather was OK.

Took over an hour to get thru the swarm.

Lil' bastids.................

Mmmmm, Cicada pizza! Who needs anchovies?

I don't see how people can ride without nothing on there face except a pair of sunglasses. I of course see mostly Harley riders sporting this attire. I for one can't stand getting smacked in the face with dust, sand, and bugs. Had a few large bugs smack my face shield and I say to myself "Thank goodness I had a full face helmet on because that would have hurt like the dickens!" Full face helmet for me thank you very much. lol

In a previous life I drove a dozer logging in northern N.S.W. the cicaders were that noisy we used to sit down and eat our smoko and lunch with our earmuffs on. There was millions of them and the noise was unbearable.

It's pretty unreal around here right now. I had to go back inside the house to talk on the phone because the other party couldn't hear me over the background noise of the cicadas. Hopefully it's only about another week of them.
