Checking the oil

You are correct. If you look in the owners handbook it says if the bike has not been run for greater than two hours run the engine briefly and let it sit for 10 min, then check the oil. I am starting to wonder if truimph marks on the dipstick are for a cold check vice a hot check. Both Harley and truimph use a dry sump system. The Harley is checked at operating temperature. I could be doing this all wrong with the truimph.

Does anyone have an experienced semi-pro advice or recommendation about which filter to use?

Also, the sticker on my tank from the factory has Castrol on it. What if I want to go with Lucas products instead?

Other Captains use a variety of brands I like Amsoil others will soon be along shortly with the brands they use.

I would say you should be ok with a stock bike using the Lucas motorcycle oils (for wet Clutches). That being said I would use it before I used Shell Rotella T6 in fact I can not think of any reason to use the Rotella unless I needed to start a burn pile out in the back 40. I do remember a guy with a Built Rocket trying the T6 and then having to pay to have his cams ground along with needing new buckets and shims. But hey use what you want I do not have to pay for the engine parts. Personally I never had problems with the recommended oils that Triumph chose but an not speak to the Castrol as the used Mobile when I bought my bike. I would say AMSoil 20W50 , Motul 300V 15W50, Redline 20W50, motorcycle oils which also happen to be Ester oils woudl be great. I am on my second round of Redline 20w50 motorcycle oil seems to be holding up well. a little on the higher price range but just as sweet as the Motul in my humble opinion. I chose it because I could buy it off the shelf verses ordering it. I also have located the AMSoil near me but I am not sure about using it in a built motor?

Ive heard good things about the WIX filters.

I used Rotella T6 for the Colorado RAA trip, two up and loaded, and the motor got rattly and the dreaded paint can rattle when cold came back. I changed back to Amsoil asap and all is good now. I have heard a lot of guys say good things about T6 but maybe the Rocket just doesn't like it. This afternoon I am putting fresh Amsoil and a new filter. You pay your money and you take your chance.

Never used Lucas before but the only bad thing I've read about it is that it tends to break down quicker than other brands so you might be changing it sooner. This is older info and quite relative so take that with a grain of salt. Personally I use Redline based on the good stuff I read about it online. For me here in Alberta the cost vs Amsoil and Motul it was the better option. 1000km with it so far and seems ok. Motul 7100 synthetic was a close #2 for the simple reason that it's red in colour and easier to read on the shiny dipstick.
I believe there is a thread on usable filters here but for now I'm using a factory filter. Wix is good stuff but isn't a factory filter made by wix? It says Wix-Filtron on it.

I have always thought the importance comparing todays premium and synthetic oils to be minimal. They are all good and even if the worst one is used but changed regularly modern motors will not go
bad because of it. I use the Castrol it calls for, why not? Some other oil may or may not be better but who knows for sure. The Castrol called for is full synthetic and easily available.
