OK guys, this is not a bike question but the electrical principal is the same and I am stumped. I'm hoping one of you guys who is good at this stuff will confirm my suspicions that I have a bad switch.
I've been mostly out by the shop today working on my boat trying to get the running lights to work. I've checked the three light housings and bulbs, cleaning them up with dielectric solvent, and they are all good. I checked all of the wires to the lights and the switch switch and all looks good. When I pull the switch to on, zilch. No lights.
The switch is one of those common marine types with three positive and three negative spades on the back end of the switch under the dash. Two are for the power input and the others for two accessories, one being lights. The leads to the switch come in from a fuse panel which tests good. When I put my tester on the wires going into the positive and negative sides of the switch, that is, "jumping" the switch, I get 12 volts of current so it is hot. I put my tester on one of the positive and one of the negative spades, turn on the switch and I get nothing. This tells me This tells me that the switch is not closing the circuit. Does this sound right? A switch is only about $20 so that is not the issue. I just hope I am on the right track.
