2009 R3 standard
Hi all,

I'm in Dallas, TX and have had my 2009 R3 standard (purchased in Dallas) for about 6 weeks. This morning I removed the left side panel to see how the Nautilus air horn would fit... and found a carbon evaporative canister as fitted to California models.

My questions are:

1. The frame sticker on my bike says it was built 09/08 (which is August, 2009 using the English date system). Are carbon cannisters standard on bikes built at this time or do I have a California spec' R3?

2. Can the carbon cannister be easily removed and the hoses re-reouted in order that I can fit the Stebel?

3. Are there any other differences to California spec' bikes that I should know about? I ask because my previous bike was a Valkyrie and California spec' Valks had different cams causing lower engine output.

I'd like to gather this information before I have a 'Come to Jesus' meeting with my dealer.

Thanks!

Regards,
Mark

It is a plastic can filled with charcoal. If you overflow when filling the tank, it goes in the can instead of on the ground.
The can let the fuel evaporate, and a solenoid opens under aceleration pulling the fumes into the intake.

California does not want fuel to spill on the ground - the oxygenate MTBE that was used in USA fuels a few years back (and is still used in many oxygenated race fuels) will poison groundwater.
Oregon is so worried that you will spill fuel, you cannot pump your own fuel.

Well I wish they'd fitted trucks with the things over here & back in the UK!!!!! friggin diesel every-bloody-where from those bastards!! esp England. The roundabouts were ( still are I bet) death traps. The filler caps need to be part of the MOT too.. ( leaking one should instant fail)

Hi all,

Thanks for your help. I don't mind the evap' cannister except for the fact it takes up space. It's good to know there are no other changes on a California spec' R3 too.

Regards,
Mark

Bought my classic in thailand and that had a canister on it, removel is easy just cut the plastic cable ties off it pull all the pipeing off canister out, rejoin the pipe that runs up to the feul filler and re route down to where the rest of the pipes go at the bottom of the engine, there are 3 small vaccume pipes one from each intake I just doubled them over and put 3 plastic ties on them also ( it was suguested to me on this site to fit 3 vaccume plugs to fit over the nipples but still trying to find them here!) just left the elec plug there, and the stebel fits in there fine bolted to the side of the air box! :Tip-Hat:
