I recently purchased the flasher and tune from BT Moto so I wanted to share my impressions of the tune. The short answer is that I think it’s well worth the money for those who don’t want to deal with an independent tuning shop or have newer models with ecu restrictions.
So for some context I have about 10K miles on my Rocket in 2 years which isn’t bad considering I really only use it for commuting, not long distance rides. I also have had an Indian Scout for almost 9 years and have extensive experience with tuning with that bike having worked directly with Dynojet here in Las Vegas on tune development for my Scout, as well as FM, and one of the best Indian tuners in the business. Basically, I learned just enough to be dangerous
One of the lessons I learned is that a quality tune should provide far more than just an increase in raw hp and torque. It really should enhance your riding experience and improve how your bike runs. This can become more challenging with a premade tune when you have a bike with significant modifications but as mine is otherwise stock that was a non-issue and unfortunately local shops were unable to connect to my ecu regardless.
The ordering process was simple as was the flashing of the tune with only a few minor hiccups that was user error on my part (my fob battery just happened to go weak at the same time so I thought the difficulty in turning on the bike was the flasher, when it was my fob, but I figured it out). Otherwise it was a straightforward process and I marginally followed the instructions lol as I’ve done this before.
Let’s get to the tune, finally right.
There is a significant improvement in fueling in the lower gears. There is no stutter when releasing the clutch and throttle increase isn’t necessary to avoid stalling. I also had the grinding noise at times when starting out in 1st and the tune has almost completely eliminated that issue as well. Miles per gallon has also improved significantly as I can go much longer without refueling. I can’t tell you exactly how much though as it doesn’t seem the mileage estimator has synced yet with the actual amount of fuel in the tank so I know by the bars I have much further I can go than what the estimator says.
As you work your way through the gears the continuation of the power band without any drop off was very noticeable to me. While the tune adds little in the way of torque, the difference in hp is noticeable and the bike feels substantially faster with quicker acceleration. Additionally the throttle response is smoother with noticeable improvements and raising the rev limiter allows you to really open the bike up and sustain wide open throttle which in turns buys you a valuable second or two more to shift. I can’t say that there is any noticeable difference in heat output, but Vegas is almost always blistering so it’s hard to tell. My record so far was 119 degrees on my bike console on the way home one day.
Overall I’m extremely happy with the tune and feel it was money well spent and value added to my riding experience. I thought my Rocket was fun before, now it’s on steroids and new tires are also helping me really enjoy it lol. BT Moto was great to deal with as well and though I would have ideally liked to have it tuned locally, it’s not an option with my model so I’m thankful BT Moto was an option.
