I was reading a post yesterday and someone mentioned not to blip the throttle on
downward gear change's as this damage's the clutch lifter shaft.
Never heard this before, can someone explain this as i'm sure there must be quite
a few riders who do this
You asked so i will tell you why.
The clutch is not the best design in the world.
when you pull on the clutch it turns the lifter shaft which in turn moves the lifter piece forward the pressure plate is spinning .if the lifter piece spins .it will wear the lifter shaft .In the end it will fail ,no clutch. Good luck with that its fun.the pressure plate is surpposed to spin on a bearing between its self and the lifter piece. Changes have been made over the years to make this better.but well its up to you . Revving it up while holding the clutch is not the best thing to do or holding it in at lights etc IMO.
Do it or don't . I have not been riding for 50 years but i have ridden a Rocket since i bought mine in Oct O4.
I don't know that much about the clutch design but I will say this. This bike has the lightest pull of any bike I own. The clutch also completely disengages the engine when in gear. If I want to roll it around with engine off and the bike in gear there is no drag when the clutch is pulled. That's never happened with any bike I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot of bikes over many years.
My '04 has 69kto miles on it. I blip the throttle, shift up clutchless, race a ZX14 evry once in a while, and occasionally leave some expensive rubber on the asphalt. I'm probably going to replace the clutch plates and springs this winter because the adjusters are getting down there but never had a clutch problem.
I have been a throttle blipper for 50 years I use the G/box downshift to 3rd as a brake so a blip take the initial load of the drive train, always have on all my rides.
Its a big heavy beast to slow down in a hurry so I don't like suddenly loading the tranny with a downshift clutch drop.. as you say the clutch system isn't the best design so I take the load off as best I can especially when we are 2up.
Having said this it's your choice, each to their own style
