Bevel Box Drain Plug

Appreciate that R3adrenaline.
Just thought there may be a cheaper, or better oil some had found and would recommend.
We have alot of guys on here who have had theirs alot longer than me, and do most, if not all their own service work, so you never know what tidbit of knowledge you can acquire if you ask.

Maybe I should just leave it be and see if it dirties up again. I will get a spare plug on order tho'.

Finally decided to drain the final drive, since I noticed today it was clearly dripping from the drain plug. I did ask my new "local" dealer (ha) to order me a couple of plugs, but it's been a few weeks now and haven't heard back. Just as well I suppose, because when I went to remove it the plug to drain the unit this afternoon, the bolt head popped off. I looked at the other thread referenced as offering help on getting the bolt out but I didn't see any help there. Just what is the best way to go about getting the headless bolt out? It is intact, less the one thread attached to the bolt head, now severed from the rest.
I'm Out Of Service and a long way from professional assistance ..... (the dealer I phoned that serviced my final drive unit last year did not even bother to return my call. great SERVICE)

It is fairly easy to remove. It is hollow with a magnet pressed in. Gently push or tap the magnet in a little then use an easy out to turn the bole out. DON"T push the magnet too far.
P.S. you can replace it, at least temporarily with a standard metric cap screw. I used an O-ring under the head to help it seal.

Use only GL-5 rted full syn in the final drive. You may only find 75-90 weight-it's ok to use that in a GL-5 rating.

This is something I don't have in my toolbox... I've never had to deal with any kind of broken bolt, so while I can appreciate it's probably not a big deal for someone who's not a mechanical moron, guess what. For eg., how far to push the magnet is far enough to allow easy out to work, what size easy out, easy out won't push the magnet in further?, is easy out same thing as what Sears calls bolt extractor (seen here
Craftsman 7 pc. Drill-Out/Screw-Out Power Extractors ) & do you recall what is the metric size on this bolt?
 trust me if there's a way to make it worse i'll find it.

The "easy out" is the same as the "bolt extractor". If the hole is visible that the magnet sets in you should be able to use that to get the bolt extractor to "bite" into. If not you may have to take a small drill bit and drill a starter hole in the center of it as best as you can, then the extractor should be able to "bite" into that.

I checked my Triumph Rocket Service Manual I have on my laptop but unfortunately it lists a lot of specs and sizes of the different bolts and fasteners....but the rear drive drain bolt isn't one of them....at least on the version I have.

As far as the bolt head size...what happened to the one that sheared off? You should be able to get the size off of that.

And if you can't get a dealer to get you a new drain plug, get ahold of Scot in Exile, I hear he has some of "my stuff" for sale on request, I'm sure he'll hook you up, he's hooked up everybody else with "parts" off of my bike.

Good luck,

Dennis

You don't need to take a drill to this bolt as it is already hollow. If you did it would probably just spin the bolt in and you would have to take the final drive apart. The bolt is not stuck and will likely come out easily. Maybe even a small screwdriver that is a good fit can be tapped in and used to remove it?

I appreciate the advice. I'm not worried about the replacement at this time, just focused on getting the balance of the existing one out... the drain plug head is 12mm. here's a picture showing the fracture at the "one thread" mark:

I'm guessing the hole I'm looking for is not the ~ 2.5mm hole in the center of what you see above. When looking at the other end still in the drive unit, there is no hole. It just looks like one solid piece of metal. Looking at the picture above tho', it almost looks like the magnet extends to about a thread depth from the inner diameter.... that suggests to me that this is a delicate operation... so anyway, I'm still not sure what size of grabber I should try, and if piloting, what size hole I should put there... I did try pushing in the center of the plug with a pick tool to see if anything moved, but not hard, and nothing did...
oh yea and by the way, is there supposed to be a seal in there? there's a recess on the drain plug that leads me to believe yes. if so, i hope it comes with the part, because of course there was not one in there from the last service
