Bobebob brought up a good point, if you only have around 400 miles on it so far my question would be have you had the first service yet? Right now you are running a semi-synthetic oil blend. At the first service that is drained out and is replaced with a full synthetic blend which is "good" till the 10,000 mile service though some have it changed earlier. When this service is done "historically" you should be able to shift into first from neutral a lot easier...less of a clunk and your gas mileage may improve some.

But if you do mods (air filters, tuneboy, exhaust, etc...) you may not see some improvement and it may decrease...but you'll have more power.

No, I haven't had the first service yet. Dealer told me to bring it in between 600-1000 miles.

Initially, for the first 200 miles, I have been operating it moderately, though now I have been accelerating it hard while rolling from time to time; trying to vary the rpm's and torque generated by the motor.

I also have been recently preoccupied with trying to upshift/downshift (not harshly) as much as possible as well to get the tranny gears meshed and worn in with each other.

I have been seeing that neutral is getting somewhat easier to find and pop into. Though sometimes at a stop while in first gear and clutch pulled in, It takes awhile to "feel" for and gain neutral. I do look forward to better shifting when the break in oil is changed out for the full synthetic.

I ran across a Rocketeer who brought his machine in for the gas gauge adjustment complaining that at half a tank it said empty. Somebody must be siphoning his gas is my guess. The light comes on which I have learned gives me a comfortable 50+ miles to go before I get concerned. Brand new I got 34. Now I get around 36 or so. Scot in Exile has never bought liters?! At 3 pints of dark warm bubbly per liter of gas or is it more now? His point is valid but I like to push the limit not as much as I once did but one day I will drain her dry, with a reserve in the bag of coarse.

My dealer also had me wait until 600mi for the initial service (it took me a whole week!). The manual says 500mi, but I think that they want to give the rings a little more time to seat. Once you switch to the full synthetic, that ship has pretty much sailed.

It sounds like you're breaking her in good.

Although it will be easier after going to full synthetic, it sometimes is still stubborn. My "trick" if you can call it that is to shift to neutral as I'm comming to a stop. As long as there is a little motion in the tranny, it pops right in for me.

I have a small update to my gas mileage: I just got back from Mt. Graham, in Arizona. from:S 1st Ave to:AZ-366 to:32.834164,-109.708614 - Google Maps I only got 26MPG. I was mostly in 1st and 2nd up and down the Mt., shifting like a mo fo to engine break and then accelerate out of the hair pin turns. So I'm happy to get as good as I got for that stretch. It was fun though!

I'm not entirely happy with the fuel gauge, low fuel light and the miles left feature of the R3T. Here's how they behave for me:

The low fuel light seems to come on when I have about a quarter of a tank left. This actually is about right according to the manual. It says the light should come on at 5L and the tank is 22.3L. But it still seems a little early for me. 30 miles seems a better warning. If I'm cruising @ 65-70, I can squeeze 60mi out of that 1.34gal.

The fuel gauge is pretty warped. It stays pegged to the top for the first gallon or so and then drops off precipitously down to half indicated (which isn't). I've figured out that I have half a tank left when the gauge read just above 1/4. It then slowly bleeds off down to E. When it first hits E, I know that there is at least a gallon left.

The miles til empty feature is a cool idea. But it bases it's estimates off of the same inaccurate reading on the fuel gauge. I've found that the initial estimate is fairly accurate, then it all goes to hell as the fuel gauge does. It is most useful towards the end of the tank as it counts down to 0.

Though I don't reccomend it, I've run it clear down to 0 and then rode 4 miles before I got gas. I put in 5.25gal or so. So I still had about 1/2gal left. As you get close to 0, the miles to go drop much slower than your actual miles. It takes a lot further than you might think to actually run it down to 0. I still wouldn't push it unless you have some gas with you.

Well, that trip today (yesterday now) finished off my 10,000mi. I'll have to schedule that service this week. It took me a whole 4 months!
