I just put the triple K&N's on my 2007 Classic, I have no cat. I had dealer do the the full power download and it seems to run real good with no issues so far. However I have noticed a little octane pinging, do I need to go to premium gas with this combo? Next week I am going to pull the second set of butterflies off. I do not plan on Tors, because I don't like lots of noise. Do I need Tune Boy with this combo? It wouldbe nice to save the cost if not needed.

If you want to get the best from what you have then
yes get T/boy, am fed up with listing advantages
see other threads

I am not asking for advantages....I know the advantages....duhh...
The question was do I need the TUNE BOY. Has anyone done this without Tune Boy or Power Commander just using factory downloads from Triumph. Considering I am NOT changing mufflers, just eliminating the cat, I thought that would be a reasonable trade off.
If you don't know the answer.....do me a favor and don't answer

Do you need it? No.
Should you get it? Yes.
Do I need to go to premium gas with this combo? RTFM.

My f....ng manual does not cover this combo....does yours?

My point is it does not APPEAR to be lean, no backfiring, it APPEARS to run good. I thought maybe someone has tried this combo, being Rocket has been out for awhile.

I plan on buying Tune Boy and having dyno'd just can't afford to do so now. If the combo is ok as is, I will run it some till I can afford.

Where did we start to get people who are so rude when someone asks a question? I have used the search function many, many times on this site. It sucks! I have answered questions as they were repeated many times as well. If you aren't in the mood to deal with the "stupid" questions (that we all ask from time to time) you don't have to answer. And you probably shouldn't.

Jeepster, you should remember that tune boy is ONLY a tool for tuning. It will allow you to tune a few things like the rev limiter, speed limiter and to open the secondaries (but not from idle!) but it is of limited use if you haven't done a lot to the bike. If you haven't done a lot to the bike, you probably aren't going to need it. If you are not going to a dyno (that can use tune boy) or you aren't inclined to screw around with it yourself then you will probably be better off spending your money elsewhere.

RTFM (Read the manual) is not a complete answer to the question about octane either. The recommended 87 octane, (in my manual here in the US) appears to be a lot different for people in other countries, many with very different qualities of gas. The salient points are that the engine is low compression, and higher octane burns slower, thereby decrease knock, (ping) but not making greater power. Therefor don't go to a higher octane to go fast. A built motor with higher compression may require higher octane gas, but it is not the gas that makes it fast. If the combination you currently have is truly knocking, (pinging) I would absolutely run the gas that works, or I would change the tune. Detonation,(pinging or knocking) is a deadly event in a motor and can destroy the motor in a relatively short time.

Now anybody who wants to go right ahead and pile on me if you feel the need, but lets remain a place to come for answers, not abuse.

My manual says to use premium gas (91 octane). No matter what combo you have or if you're bone stock.

Not rude, mobile, hard to type, not much time to do it. Sorry.

I usually find whatever I'm looking for with search as long as you use the modifiers right. Read the small text under Search for Keywords. Use the AND OR and NOT modifiers

Or, you can use Google by entering your search phrase and then entering site:r3owners.com at the end (or the beginning). This will only return results matching your query that are on r3owners.com and give results like:
http://www.google.com/search?q=fuel+oct ... owners.com

Well, I have an early model (1/200 '05 model) so maybe my manual is fuxored?

Although it shows all the drain bolts with crush washers correctly where newer manuals don't.
