Won't start in cool weather

I’ve had my 06R3 for almost three years. I has 8500 miles on it, but a problem has developed over the past six months. When I try to start it in cool weather (say, below 50F), the engine cranks, but won’t fire. If I jump start it, it fires right up and runs fine, and will start OK for the rest of the day. I don't touch the kill switch or the throttle when starting.

It’s been in to the Triumph shop a couple of times – they put in a new battery, and they say the electrical checks out OK. They gave me some voodoo advice about priming the fuel injection a couple of times before trying to start it. That did no good at all.

I have TORS and cat delete with Tuneboy. Anyone have any ideas with which I can enlighten my “mechanicâ€Â

Get a PC625.

Also, it has been reported, and tested to work that if you hit start and let it turn over about 3 times and then let go, then press start again, 3 times and stop, somewhere in the cycle it will fire up.

Don't just crank and crank and crank.

Thanks much. Going to try to get the dealer to cover this "design flaw" by replacing the new factory battery they installed with a PC625.

I wouldn't call it a design flaw. You're spinning a 1.2kw starter motor with a 12v motorcycle battery that also has to keep a computer, fuel pump, idle stepper, fuel injectors and coils running.

Well, maybe it is a design flaw but they had limited space to stick a battery of limited capacity. Technically, the PC625 doesn't fit, even though it does.

The battery itself isn't "bad", just probably not the right one for the job.

In cold weather I have to keep mine on the 'tender if I plan on starting it..... if the bike is fresh off the tender I can usually get it to start in to the upper 20's..... without the tender there isn't a snowball's chance in hell.

I had the same problem. Bought the Triumph Battery Optimizer and that fixed the cold start problem. I would have bought the PC625 instead but in the dealers attempt to fix the problem, they replaced the battery with another stock battery. It wasn't under warranty so I got raped for $120.00.
