Hello,

I am planning to improve the rear suspension of my 2013 RIII Roadster: less wallowing in bumpy curves and a softer ride over bumps is the goal.

I contacted both Progressive and Hagon.

Hagon replied:

"We have several options that work well for your Rocket III. Each of them can be built for your weight.

The Hagon Twin Shocks for your bike are $199.00 for the pair and we provide free ground shipping within the United States. They have a black body and are available with both standard and slim-line springs with a spring color choice of chrome or black.

They have a three way adjustable preload and come complete with an adjusting tool and directions.

The Hagon Twin Shock is guaranteed for two years.

If you are more interested in a classic look, we offer shrouded shocks, too. The Hagon Classic I is available for $243.00 and the Hagon Classic II and III are available for $287.00.

We also make a Hagon Custom Shock in stainless steel for $299.00.

If you require greater flexibility in your damping control, we make the Hagon 2810 10 position adjustable shocks available for $299.00.

Our top of the line shock is the Hagon Nitro. It has 10 click adjustable damping, a 38 mm piston, an 18mm hard chrome piston rod and comes in stainless with a choice of black or silver anodized parts. It is fully rebuildable and sells for $499.00 a pair.

To order, we would require your full address, contact telephone number and payment details. We accept all major credit/ debit cards.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact us."

Does it make sense to go all the way to the Nitro? Has anyone tried their lower cost shocks?

Will there be a noticeable difference between their entry level and their top of the line shocks?

I don't know how much adjustability I need. I weigh ~155 lb. and ride only solo.

Any input is much appreciated!

Greetings from wintry Colorado,
Armin

I tried Hagon Nitros, Progressive 440s with standard and heavy springs, Standard early shocks on my 05 Rocket and the Std Roadster ones on my 2010 and 2011 Roadster which are the comfort ones from the earlier model. I have used Fournales Air shocks for the last 3 years, they do what you are looking for but have to be pumped up if you want to change loads like for a passenger. If you ride solo most of the time with a similar load on the bike then these are the best option but cost a lot more. I'm 220lbs and went round France to break them in with a passenger and very overloaded with luggage. They worked great.

The factory made me a set of HD alloys, the black ones with the alloy rings to suit my Roadster.

Perfect but a pain if you have to keep adjusting for a passenger, I usually don't bother and put up with the soft ride from the extra weight.

They are available in Aus and I'm sure they are in USA too.

The only time I have known a Rocket to wallow was my 3rd one. I fitted the air suspension at 40 miles, as soon as I got it home from the dealer, new. On one side the lugs were lower than the other when I only had one shock fitted and was trying to get the other on, it didn't matter which way round I tried. As I ran the bike in and rode it faster I began to notice wallowing and traced it to a loose swinging arm. The swinging arm pivot bearing had not been torqued up at the factory, had been steadily coming undone and was enough to move the swinging arm up and down by and inch or so.

Hi Armin,

About 2 or 3 years ago Wayne Tripp of this parish organized a group buy of Hagon Nitros. I purchased a pair to replace the Progressive 440s on my 2009 standard and they've been terrific. Compression and rebound damping are easily adjustable and their stability in bends has saved my bottom a couple of times. I'm 172lbs and I often ride with the missus, who is... ummm... heavier than I.

Hope this helps.
