What's the point?

Hopefully that will be the horn that wakes up that lady drifting into your lane. And hopefully the Thunderbird horn is louder than the stock Rocket one.

Who needs thump?

Come on y'all! You've got to be kidding me. Why do so many riders want to sound like everybody else out there. I'm a wanna be rocket owner BECAUSE of the sound it makes. Hell, I've only heard one exhaust note that I think beats it and that is the Royal Star with nastyboys 4-2-4. Sounds like a mini Ferrari. The Rocket triple is just unmistakable and unique. Screw the potato!

We see plenty of riders at demo days who like the R3 but are put off by the size. WE know that that's not an issue but some simply will not have it. Many, if not most dealers will tell you Triumph needed a bike in the size range for the T-Bird. 865 is thought to be too small by some and most cannot handle our BFG's!

Triumph did what was needed-remember the R3 exists because USA dealers insisted that the bike be the biggest production bike available-and it sells fairly well. A bike a bit smaller fills in the gap. It's astounding how many walk into a showroom with their buds (most have H-D's) and the friends tell the guy "865 ain't gonna cut it" so no sale. No matter what the facts point to. Now, the H-D's guys don't mention that at all with the 'Bird. Granted, those riders will never change-for them it's a HOG or nothing-but, agree or disagree-perception in the buyers mind is reality. To that end, riding in on a Triumph sure beats riding in on a UJM and that matters to a LOT of buyers. No, not the real riders who go 5-10,000 miles or more a year but the guy who rides 750 miles a year.
Hey, no reason Triumph should not take their money, too.
Sure does seem like this bike has polarized the faithful a great deal but it's needed in a showroom. The fact that it runs rings around 99% of the competition is a bonus.

I figger anyone that buys a T'Bird will be someone who likes to go slow. Most likely an ex-Hardley rider......:D

C'mon Flip, you gonna hold that against me?
Everybody needs to start with underpowered, slow pieces of junk,
to get you ready for a REAL bike.

Besides, IF I get one, it'll be for the wife.
There's a harley sittin out there already if I want to go slow...;)

So why an "upgrade big bore kit"?

Why not just make the **** thing bigger in the first place. It's a Harley idea that Triumph is using. They might as well call it a Screaming eagle wannabe kit.
I'd never buy a harley that needs a "kit" to make it a decent bike and I'll never buy a Tbird until it comes with the "kit" factory without me having to shell out extra duckies to get it.

...After having looked and sat on a T'Bird in Marne and listening to Pigger's riding impressions (I didn't ride one, was busy with other things), I've come to the conclusion that it's all in the styling and execution.

the R3 is a 'love it or hate it' motorcycle. It's execution certainly polarizes the potential customer, while the T'Bird is more mainstream or what customers 'think' a bike should look like both in execution and design. From the now widely accepted rubber band drive to the fuel tank mounted gages to the pull back handlebars, Triumph has mimicked the American Icon, the multi-nationally assembled HD. Face the facts, red blooded American males and females equate a potato bike to power and virility. We all know they aren't powerful unless you spend thousands and can accept an engine life of a month or so, but that's not the perceived image.

Triumph is just capitalizing on that image for their profit (hopefully).

I'd rather se a 360 deg firing order

Wouldn't a 360deg firing order produce more HP & torque than the 270 deg?

Based on the difference between the America & Bonneville, it looks like 15-20% more power.

Then add the 1700 kit on top of that :)

I've said it before, but I like the twin headlamps and bar mounted instruments (like the Thruxton).

My dealer has dynoed all of the Bonnies (classic, America, etc.) and said they're all the same.

I test drove a T-Bird and while not as powerful as the Rocket, it is definitely not slow. It has a lot more torque than the stock It looks great and handles great.

Horsepower is a direct result of compression, gas flow and design parameters while torque is a direct result of piston travel and mass acting on the flywheel to produce rotary motion.

Firing order has little to do with either. Firing order results in less primary vibration and exhaust sound.
