Valve shim size

I think I'll probably do the tune-up except for the valve-measuring part to begin with and see how it sounds. I'm wondering if I'm hearing the valve train just because the oil & filter change are more than due and I've lost some viscosity in the oil.

The clearance is more likely to close up not loosen. The need to shim is to maintain the clearance so that the valves fully close so it is unusual to hear noise from valve clearance. It's not a huge deal to take off the cam cover and check. If any valves are out of spec then it becomes a big job.

I would check the drop on the tensioner to make sure you do not need to add the spacer. This could be some of the noise your hearing along with the famous lifter piece rattle. When you do this check do not try to start or turn the engine over via starter while the center nut is out of the tensioner. Failure to listen to this warning can be catastrophic to your bike and wallet.

Thanks for the warning, Warp! I'll disconnect the battery before I get into any of that just to ensure that such a thing doesn't happen! I know those tensioners are $130 each on bikebandit.com, but I didn't see any spacers. What measurement would I be taking and what are the tolerances, if you happen to know? A link to a photo or page describing it, or if it's been discussed in another thread I haven't found yet, would be great! I really appreciate all of you! In my town of 40,000 people, I have the only Rocket that I know of, so there isn't anyone around here I can ask.
