Years ago there was plenty of research done on bearing brands for the Norton Commando and IIRC the consensus was that FAG and SKF bearings were the best but to ensure that they were manufactured in U.K., Canada, U.S.A. or Germany only and stay away from those made in Portugal and S. America.
Nowadays I doubt we have that luxury as most stuff is probably made in Asia.
I'm not sure of the reason for replacing the bearing housing, having heard that it was because of an alignment issue and also heard the oilways were made bigger too but they were all replaced with the update kit.
