Transmission question

hey all,
As some of you know I have recently bought a 2005 r3 turbo.
It has recently had the gearbox repaired by the previous owner after smashing 3-4 (I think).
It rides really good BUT.
When initially engaging first gear it does not “clunk” then when releasing the clutch it feels like the gears turn a while (split second) then it feels like the gearbox engages with a clunk. It also at times slips in first gear - I know the engine needs to come out to fix but I want to try to get a heads up to try to get it all ready. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Do you know if he did anything with the torsional damper ? Of course is its that you could drop the sump and find some bits down there if its not been long you might even get away with the same sump gasket.

Literally only done 100 miles since gearbox rebuild and has had triumph gearbox overhaul in the past including torsion dampener

With the sump pan down one could also check the nut on the end of the output shaft. I've seen them loose and the shaft endplay becomse large and moves to and from from the torque generated by the angle of helix on the helical gear. I seen one get so loose the shim on the front of the shaft dropped and blocked first gear engagement.

Engaging 1st means 5th moves over to mesh dogs with 1st's windows. Sounds like dogs not going into windows straight away when you want to select 1st. Since it's an 05 i wonder is your engine older than #246088 where 1st gear out had 6 windows and 6 dogs on 5th. Engines since have 4 windows in 1st and 8 dogs on 5th to mesh with it. Perhaps they didn't update them in the rebuild?

I think I have worked out what the problem might be. I have a R3R transmission that I have been looking over. What I think the previous owner did is install first gear on the output side backwards - the windows are offset and therefore the dogs don’t reach. Just a theory right now but I am on my way to finding out - and I made a frame for the engine.

Sounds like the same rounded dogs/windows problem i had....would be forced apart under load causing fork problems. Your reversed 1st cog theory makes sense too.

The issue was a missing thrust washer,
When I got the bike it can with a box of parts etc. so I rummaged thought it and found the omitted part. I got the bike after a gearbox rebuild due ro a gear failure and knew the problem existed and new the parts were all new in the gearbox so it made sense that the issue was fairly simple (apart from pulling the engine out of course)

Gee Mittzy I thought I was seeing double for a moment I knew I hadn't drunk that much last night after loosing to the Aussies.

Hope you can get it all back together easily.
