TPS Replacement Problem

Ok,

Started to finally have the dreded idle problem after 24,500mi... Can't do the idle recall tune (which only works half the time anyway) due to my turbo tune being based on 20050 '06 family of tunes. So Triumph of Windber replaced both the primary and secondary TPS to be sure all was ok... Idle problem was fixed, but now the engine starts to miss at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). No missing at any other throttle position. Otherwise bike runs great. Triumph of Windber tried adjusting the throttle cable pulley near the throttle bodies to no avail. Also checked coils & plug wires. All ok... So they ordered another set of TPS... Has anyone else run into a situation like this with TPS replacements?

Mike...

Sorry to hear of that Mike. Like Skip's mine has started to idle up a bit high but quickly settles in. Actually it is intermittent since I installed the Jards and had the TOR tune downloaded.

Hey Walt - How are you doing? It feels like an ignition miss, but almost like you are hitting the rev limiter... I can be doing 2K, 3K or 5K rpm - bike crusing along fine - peg the throttle and the missing occurs before I ever reach readline.. If I do a gradual roll-on, all is fine until I reach the WOT position. Once in a great while, I would get a backfire with a nice bright orange flame when coming off WOT, but this was before I developed TPS problems. I thought of the tune and reflashed the boostisgood Tuneboy tune - no avail. For the fuel - boostisgood uses a PCIII with the PCIII boost sensor. Ignition timing is done through Tuneboy. The boostisgood kit contains a Tuneboy tune, PCIII tune and a boost module tune. Didn't reflash the PCIII stuff yet. Maybe I will try that this week... Gut tells me it still may be the push-pull throttle cable pulley adjustment at the throttle body.. I say that because my right Kuryakan handgrip was also replaced a week before the TPS.. When they installed that grip the first time last year, I had a similar missing problem, but just as the throttle was rolled on from idle, not at WOT... Playing with the corse throttle cable adjustment at that pulley fixed it.. I think the throttle cable pulley may be forcing the TPS beyond its range.. I will have them revist this if the TPS replacement doesn't work...

MIGHT be worth pluggin in tuneboy & watching the throttle position % twisting open the throttle.. If the cable is making it hit 100% before the grip is maxed??( just to test the cable theory)

Walt,

The best I can describe is that it feels like you are hitting the rev limiter. So your idea of fuel starvation may be good one. At 24.5K miles, I still have the original fuel pump. I will have them check the fuel filter and pump. It does only happen at WOT and does stop if you lessen the throttle. The backfire has only happened twice since I have had the turbo over the last year and a half. Both times it was after closing the throttle quickly after accelerating to WOT. Triumph of Windber said they checked the coils and plug wires. I can recheck the PCIII connections and reflash the tune. That is all I can do at this point since I don't know of any diagnostics for the PCIII. Thanks for your insights.

OK,

We changed the TPS once again, replaced all three coils... Still missing at WOT today... We then stumbled upon a loose bolt that held the airbox for the turbo ontop of the number three throttle body... Tighted that - Problem solved!!!!! Turns out at high boost (i.e. WOT) the airbox was lifting off the throttle body, decreasing boost and letting normal air in... The bike was saying WTF??? ,which cased the missing.. Gotta watch for the strangest things when you do these kinds of upgrades  ....

So she wasn't missing she was going fat rich and stumbling on herself. That makes sense to bad you had to spend all the money before you located the problem. Us FA guys whether its a turbo or a blower can learn from this so I myself must thank you.
time to store your findings in my Rocket folder.

If it is TPS, I would guess that they overtorqued it. Tell them to RTFM. I think it's 3.5nM of torque or lb/ft, can't remember which.

Either way, that's barely finger tight on the screw.

Glad I could help... It is only cost me a new TPS and about 2 hours labor... They put the original coils back... The TPS had to be replaced anyway because of the rough idle...
