Things I should do when removing the fuel tank?

I plan to replace spark plugs and air filter soon. Is there anything else I should do while the tank is off. Is there a fuel filter?

Go to Napa and buy a fuel quick connect, a 7.89 which is about 1/4 at a 45°. The 90° that it comes with does not allow enough room to disconnect. The 45 will give you about 2" more. The fuel quick connect is behind the off switch, the quick connect has 2 buttons to push to disconnect, and the wire to the fuel tank is a bit harder. You will have to feel around and either push the button on the plug to disconnect the plug from the housing or push the button on the plug to disconnect the plug from the other plug.You'll have to loosen up the display and rotate it forward. Take the bolt off on the tank right below the display and Hinge up the tank. Slowly, so as not to break the clip on the wiring and also not to break the quick connect, I stuffed a little chunk of wood underneath there to hold it up while I disconnected the two.sparkplugs you will have to unbolt the coils,the air filter is a different story I just removed a stud but it is said that the air filter cover kinda rotated down and shifts to the front of the bike and comes off but I thought it was going to break so I just removed the stud you'll see what I mean just take your time and think about what you're doing. It'll be fine.

If I take the tank off the bike can a longer fuel hose and longer electric wires be installed so the next time removing the tank will be easier ? Has anybody done this ?

Get a pair of cheap disconnect pliers and be careful- it's plastic and you wouldn't be the first person to break one. The fuel filter is inside the tank. Yes, replace it while you're there. The manual calls for a new gasket, but I've reused mine 3X. A swivel socket for the plugs is really helpful. If you're pla ning on running accessory lights and/or a video camera up front now would be the time to do so to run the wires, although it can be done with the tank on blindly (along the left side, up and over the left tank mount).

put extra layer of heat shield under tank where the factory has put it

If you have that stupid ignition switch on the side, I'd take the opportunity to bypass and remove it.
