Unless it is a detent spring which usually you can still shift gears just not hold them in gear.
If the shifter moves freely without shifting gears you probably lost the bolt in the gear change actuator arm. If this is so the engine has to come out so you can split it to get at the culprit.

Its not bad. The good thing is you can pull the front first and expose the clutch. This way if it is the detent spring your there and back together. If not then your back to pulling the motor. You do not have to release the timing on the valves to do the transmission. What year is the beast.

It could be the detent spring. The first time mine broke it stuck in 1st gear. Fortunately I was only two miles from home. The second time it broke I was able to shift through all the gears, but had to hold it in 2,3 & 4 by keeping pressure on the shifter.

I have around 130,000 miles on the bike. I suspect that I weakened the spring when I used long-nosed pliers to install the first one, which is why I mentioned it in my instructions. (See signature).

IDK: Just a quick post to thank you for posting the detent spring replacement instructions. I printed them out and used them to replace the spring on my 2008 R3T this past week. I have a shop manual for the bike, but your instructions included some advice not to be found there. Appreciate the time you have taken to post the instructions for this and other things.
