Snatchy Rear End

I have had an intermittent problem for a couple of months. It is becoming more frequent and as a result, more worrying.

Under hard acceleration I get a split second loss of drive followed by the usual manic acceleration. It can happen as I start to accelerate or midway through racing through the rev range. It rarely happens during quarter throttle smooth acceleration, but it is not unknown.

At first I thought it was a momentary electrical glitch, but I am becoming convinced the splines are jumping. Is this possible and if so has anyone else had something similar?

Bare in mind, when I say hard acceleration, I mean fkn hard acceleration.

The bevel box is a sealed unit, Triumph won't let their dealers split em, so it's not like you can crack it open and have a squint.

I'm not sure if it is the rear, or some other part of the drive train.

I would think that if you jumped a spline, you'd hear it.

There is this thread about an issue with the bevel box, but I don't know if it is the same as your issue. Their bevel box went out completely!

Hey Paul has anyone ever lubed your splines? If not this would explain why your awnry

Its either that the clutch or your going to need the upgrade kit!

Paul whip wheel out, rear hub is easily removed, check splines on both shaft & hub & shaft universal joint, regrease on assembly use correct grease. If no signs of problem, I have a new rear hub, your welcome to borrow it to see if problem is hub or elsewhere.

If the gears were slipping you would HEAR that regardless of the padding in your helmet and noise from the exhaust. It would sound similar to a shotgun going off as the gear skipped and caught the next tooth. If there is a momentary loss of power without a mechanical pop-bang-boom-crunch! involved, then your problem is more likely fuel delivery or ignition advance. The feed into the combustion chamber if not as stout as needed or timing too retarded for the amount of gas delivered will make the power wax like you left the throttle cable at home. Check your fuel and ignition timing with yon Tuneboy and dyno. Snap the throttle on the dyno and see if you can duplicate the flat spot. My guess is your gremlin is in the ECM, not the bevel box.

If it were more nuclear I would have a better diagnosis. :wink:

Thanks guys, I'll have a look at the splines as soon as I get a chance. Hombre is reporting having the same problem before losing second gear completely and needing the infamous upgrade. :shock: I hope it's not that. Dealers over here have had a lot more difficulty than those in the US getting Triumph to sanction any out of warranty work, let alone a fix that expensive on a slightly modified bike. :wink:

Have you had the ignition switch problem yet, I did today. It died and went like your symptoms suggest, but the ignition lights cycled off and on as well. The engine does not need to wait for the ignition cycle to complete to restart. It took half an hour to fix by removing the bottom cap and resoldering the joint. I was lucky I was going past a friends place at the time and he had the gear to fix it.

Perd seems odd that it would be still going after numerous gear tooth jumps, once it has made the room in the bearing / housing to jump a tooth I reckon it would last no time at all. If it is gettting into angle gear and the tacho is bending the needle more than a couple of times before complete failure I'm :? . The Frocket had similar intermitant power lost under acceleration that, for half a second felt like the power had been turned off at 2500rpm and at 4700rpm, It ended up being just one primary wire on the #2 coil pack being loose
