Hello to all fellow R3'ers from NC... ...

A belated welcome from just east of you! How is the leg healing up? I don't remember who to attribute it to but someone in here gave the advice " Park wisely"
 
I'm pleased to be the first to extend a hardy welcome to the site from The Garden State, Captain ONC. You've made a wise decision to adopt the cream of the crop to ride in, around and through that beautiful area you call home.

Thanks for the welcome. Raleigh's a great town - lived in that area for about 4 years or so when I was a little kid. My "love of my life's" (who I lost suddenly 1 year ago) son/daughter in law live near Lake Wheeler (and I still can't drive to their house w/out mapping it first...literally)

The leg's ok, now, I believe. It wasn't anything horrific to begin with. Whenever one gets something "new", especially when it only has two wheels, what looks to be a repainted 1942 John Deere tractor motor, and weighs over half a ton with rider - hey, something's gonna' give. No, I really like the machine in the short 450 or so miles I've put on it since Friday. I keep reading so many different "you'd better do this or that or so-and-so, or the drive train will fail", and "watch out for a deteriorated craggometer breamoheater split ring termatraveler" stories, that I'm getting paranoid about my purchase already... Dangit, I didn't want a hog or a Wing! But what I sense is, "IDIOT! NOW just look what you've gone and bought...." LOL! (kidding... I really love m/cycles that are "something different"... heck, I just love motorcycles, period.) I did buy this one as hopefully a longtime "keeper", and maybe the last bike I need.

Well thanks so much. I've seen some of your other posts "here and there" as I've poked around the forum a bit... obviously you're approaching 'old timer' status, here. Probably because I didn't miss the bouncing hooters avatar. oorah.
How long have you owned an R3?
 
Going into my sixth season with the best bike I have ever owned in over 50 years of riding. She's a bit of a handful from time to time, but absolutely my fave out of the roughly dozen and a half motorcycles I've owned and hundreds that I've ridden over the years.

Yes, it's hard to miss me with ol' "Bouncing Betty" leading all of my posts. Speaking of avatars, you'd do well to update the photo of that dinosaur in yours with an updated picture of you and your permagrin astride your new beast!:roll:

LOL... you're probably right... that avatar photo of mine was taken in May 1990 as I'd just gotten back in from Bike Week down at Myrtle B./SC. We always rode 'em down and back, and saw a lot interesting phenomena on the road, including the live version of your avatar, yet spontaneously unclad. (I'll let it go at that... lol...)
 
I see you're up early, like myself (I wake TOO early, usually), though I just got online. Appreciate the holler from up there. Yeah, I just bought this one - a brand new '14... saved me quite a bit over the '15, and is the exact same machine, colors and all. This is hopefully the last machine I'll buy, and I wanted something sturdy, heavy and strong. I've ridden her 4 hundred and some-odd miles since Friday, and am looking fwd to getting the first service "over with". This machine came with one of the Castrol syn's., from factory (they've obviously got a promo collusion going, lol...)... but what oil are you using in yours, currently? Sticking w/Castrol syn, or other?

Not up early on purpose, I usually don't wake up till 0430 or so. I had to see the doc so he could look inside me (all is well BTW).

I have stayed with the Castol syn so far, don't see a need to change. Like IDK says, just ride it like they intended and all is well. :)
 
How 'bout that... I know 9 and "Bat Cave"... and you probably know "Christmount", right there as you start up that winding, "Warning to Truckers" run on 9... it's our church-affiliated camp I spoke of. Yep, I know Bat Cave. In fact, we'd camp at Christmount, then run over your way and on to Lake Lure as part of our "run"... from L.L. we'd come on down through Rutherfordton, and work our way back home, gradually. My best riding buddy who made that run with me multiple times over many years ended up losing the fingers of his "clutch hand" in a table saw accident, a good number of years ago, and consequently I haven't made that riding/camping run in many years, now (I'd roughly guess it's been earliest part of the 00's). We'd just meander through those "twisties" on 9 - I'm no "hot-dogger" - I just love the air and the scenery!

FYI - I have a friend did the same on his left hand. Didn't lose the fingers, but buggered them up pretty bad, ending his guitar playing.
He developed a splint that allowed him to work his clutch (Kaw V2K) while his fingers healed up. Bet your buddy could do the same if he wanted.
 
Depends what you mean by "care and modest riding". Mine gets an oil change every 10,000 miles as per the manual, tyres when needed, a squirt with a water hose every now and then, and a quick spray of Lemon Pledge from time to time, and not much more. 124,000 miles of modest ;) riding so far and all is well.

That's excellent... by "modest riding", I meant "not flogging the h*ll out of the thing". I've never mistreated my machines (well, let me re-think that... when I was 18 to maybe early 20's, uh....).

BTW, the Trumpet dealer automatically put Amsoil 10w40 Motorcycle in it at the 500 mile service, which is perfectly fine and good. I've used Amsoil in other machines over the years, and it's seemingly a pretty tough oil of the POA type syn. But I suspect that Castrol Racing 4T syn. that they're putting in 'em at the factory is more than adequate, too. Yep, I've used Pledge on my windscreens for years... it'll loosen bug goo up right fast, and leaves a lasting shine with a pleasant, lemony spring-like fragrance that your whole family will love! (lol...)
