(UPDATE PLEASE READ) Purchased an 05 R3, Have a Few ?

I have been a member for awhile now, and have been mostly reading, but now I am going to pick up my Brand Used R3 on Friday. The bike is mint with every add-on you could think of. I do have a few questions for the Long Timers Here.

The bike has D&D 3 to 2 Exhuast, with Cat Removed, the owner says that it is not loud and sounds more like a British Sports Car than Anything. Is there a way to make this exhaust loud, by removing Baffles or different inserts from D&D or will I have to look into a different exhaust for a nice tone?

Anything I should be specifically looking for with the R3, that may show me something to worry about?

Thanks Fellas, and I look forward to posting pictures and getting the R3 Bug.....

Congratulations and welcome to the site, When you pick up your Rocket tell them not to start it before you get there. The pain can rattle is usually only heard when the engine is cold. Start her up and slowly rev to about 2000 rpm and slowly back off. The paint can rattle is well named. It sounds like the rattle ball in a spray paint can. Rocket engines make a lot of noise. If you hear a sewing machine noise or a sound like a speedo/ tach cable (it doesn't have either) don't sweat it just grin and twist the throttle.

My bike shifts best at 2500 RPM and over. Most of my shifts a fairly smooth, some are like a dump truck. as long as it doesn't jump out of gear your OK.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the headsup, as far as the paint can rattle goes, I have read post on it, but is it model specific and is there a certain mileage that this tends to happen. This bike has close to 7k.

Once you have bought the bike please kick the previous owner squarley in the nads for me, 7000 miles on a 2005 bike it is bloody disgraceful:mad:
Enjoy the bike you will hear a lot of strange noises from the Rocket after all it was not built for looks or smoothness but I have over 40000 trouble free miles on my 2005std.:D

Congrats and Welcome aboard.
My wifes '05 had about 7000 miles when she got it too.
That guy wanted to go back to a "real" motorcycle,
a hardly...........
What a dufuss.
She likes it and is happy with HIS choice.;)

D&D Pipes

The bike has D&D 3 to 2 Exhuast, with Cat Removed, the owner says that it is not loud and sounds more like a British Sports Car than Anything. Is there a way to make this exhaust loud, by removing Baffles or different inserts from D&D or will I have to look into a different exhaust for a nice tone?

When bought my R3, it had D&D 3 into 2 pipes already installed. These pipes were way, way too loud for me - forcing me to wear ear plugs whenever I rode. Now, these pipes do have internal baffles which are easily removed, if you want to make them even louder. Personally, I quieted mine down by installing some additional sound deadening material. I bought some hardware cloth, (which is like window screen but more coarse), layered this with some fiberglass cloth, rolled it into a tube about 12 inches long , and shoved it into the exhaust pipes ahead of the factory baffles.

Well, the worst that could happened, ended up happening. I purchased the bike yesterady and after warming it up today on a good 50 mile ride the bike started the Paint Can Rattle. This one is a bit different than others have posted and the sound clips in from other members is quiet different also. This noise is on the button at 2000rmp, it sounds like a bee bee in a tuperware bowl, or a leaf in a vent almost. Not as loud as others paint can problems but a noise none the less. It is hard to pin point the area of the noise and sometimes it even sounds like a small washer in the fuel injection cover. Anyway, I contacted the owner about the issue and asked for help with the fix from Triumph or a return of the bike, so we will see what happens.

Does anyone know, how long a bike can go with this problem?

It is a must to have it fixed?

I don't have a warranty, what would be the possibilty of Triumph covering this issue and were should I even start?

Any suggestions would be great.........

valve loose guys?
BB in a tuperware bowl...???
Thats a new one on me.
Where do you live?
You close to any of us where we could actually hear it.
Dealer close?
Any other symptoms or just a noise?

I am in Maryland

Closest Dealer is one hour

No other symptoms other than the noise, I just got back from a long ride and all throughout the ride, I could hear this noise exactly at 2000rmp, doesn't matter if you are in gear or clutch in and passing through 2000rmp it still makes it, if you hold at 2000rmp in gear or not, it makes the noise and will sustane as long as you keep at 2000rmp. I thought maybe it was the radiator screen making the noise so I had the wife hold 2000rmp and it sounds like it is coming from the lower parts of the engine. I don't know, I am brand new to the Triumph Sceen and this sucks, plain out sucks.....

I did contact the previous owner and he pretty much said, Tuff Titty. He had never nocticed any problems and I paid and left with it yesterday and buying a used bike or car there is no warranty.

I am puzzled to say the least.....
