My brand new rocket does make a big "clank" noise whenever I change gears, up or down. On any of them. :(
Will this be a big problem?

Give it a little time to where in. After your 500 mile oil change there should be an easing up. Insure your clutch is adjusted correctly. I dare say the clunk will never cease entirely. It will become less.

my 07 has over 3k on it and it still clanks a ton. i found if you only pull the clutch in about 70% and shift firm/crisp ie faster it is real quiet but my theory is clank around and don't worry bout it till the warranty is close to expiring. actually my problems is it misses second too often and ill end up in neutral. thats no fun when your at the stoplight track.

I've just retensioned a bit the clutch's bowden cable adjuster and locking nut and it's better now. Tomorrow I will try to fine-adjust it a little better. Thanks.
I love my new bike ;) I like the sound and feel. Well I hate the clunk because it makes me think that something's wrong... but that's the only thing I don't like.

Time....

Relax:

I now have a little over 6K miles and the clunk is still there accept it isn't quite as loud as it used to be. I also ride with guys who have Hardley's and Kawi Vulcans...they are also loud...especially on the down shift. One of the Vulcans is so loud you look back for parts that have fallen off....
Enjoy you new toy.....SB..

I have found most bikes clunk when shifting, does not seem abnormal to me. You want clunking....ride a Harley, they got clunking and the new models have gear whining also.

relax, your on the right track, clutch adj. is important on the r3, the trans is noisey by design, (like a lot of other brands) but proper clutch adj. will make less noticeable, so go ride and be safe Jeff

I very seldom use the clutch from 2nd to 5th gear it just pops in real smooth. The Rocket gear box is one of the loudest boxes always wear ear plugs when you shift gear.:D
OK, so the noise is normal, that's good news for me.
About chaging gear without using the clutch I read in this forum that the R3 wasn't the best candidate for doing this. I could do that, always upwards, that is, 2nd to 3rd, etc with a Guzzi I had. So if the clutch cable would brake in a trip, that possibility gived me some peace of mind.
Anyway with the clutch cable adjustment it is a lot better now. The point is that sometimes it is so silent that makes me think why normaly it is that noisy, but with time I guess I will get that instinct needed to do it in the right revolution regimen.
