05 r3 16k service. I presented my R3 to the Triumph dealer shop in Perth Aust. My bike had a nasty noise (a sort of loud cracking) after the checked it they told me the G/Box output shaft bearing had failed.. a design problem apparently...Expensive he said and out of warranty :( so repair it and ask Triumph to supply the parts FOC I said.. luckily they at the big T agreed to supply a full Engine Mod Kit.. but I had to pay the labour + the service A$1700.00..about 50% ot total :)

After all of this I still have a nasty noise?? when I wheel it into the home garage.. it sounds to be coming from the Drive shaft of Bevel box unit.. a sort of ticking, binding, seized bearing-ish sound. the dealer said its nothing maybe just the sound of the shaft turning..

Anybody experienced any noises from the shaft drive unit area???

Dennis (sorry long story)

Is it the same noise that you had before the repair I would pull the final drive unit and check the splines on the drive shaft I had to replace my drive shaft and final drive the splines were almost gone looked like a hacksaw blade

Nope.
You might want to take it back and have them add a dab of grease to the hub splines though. Sounds like it's dry.

Hey thanks guys..
Maybe you are correct with the dry spline sound feezable to me.
Incidently the Engine Mod job is Ok they seem to have done it well.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I know after the output shaft bearing went out on mine
and Triumph replaced the WHOLE rear end assembly,
I never heard another sound out of it, so I'd take it back,
or at least pull it apart and see if the parts "look" new.

Hot Rods of Fayetteville , NC. did my upgrade and also found that the original problem ( no drive and noise from the finial drive ) was the drive shaft had all of the teeth worn off of the shaft, and the finial drive had most of it's teeth worn off to. Triumph covered all parts . :D Total cost to me $124.93  :D

Ditto Skid Marks response . . . my drive shaft was toast as well as the output bearing on mine last year.

Take it back and have 'em look over the drive shaft and at the very least grease that puppy. :D

I did return with the bike and finally got the boss man to have a listen, I suggested to him it may be the shaft spline running dry but he said NO as they would have greased it during assy. So it goes back tomorrow Fri for repair again and I fly to Japan on Sat for 2 weeks vacation visiting my wifes family :)

He said it would be ready when I return...mmm. being a supicious person I wonder what he is goin to do whilst I am not around to keep an eye on things... so just in case I have a letter to give him requesting not to carry out any chargable work until I have inspected the results of the problem first.

This was the best I could think of under the circumstances.

Anyway many thanks again guys for the guidance.

Regards to all
Dennis

This has me thinking of taking a look at my drive shaft condition before making the long trip down to Texas next month. After dropping the rear tire out, is it fairly simple to pull the bevel box off? Also, do you put the same grease on the driveshaft splines as you use on the bevel box splines?

Hi TDRAGGER
Good question unfortunatly I have never attempted to do this yet, the local dealer is going to check thru' the drive system whilst I am on vacation. I have just purchased a hydraulic lifting platform so that I can service the thing myself.
I would suggest a good graphite or high temp grease for the shaft spline and hub spline myself.. but maybe you could post an enquiry for the correct spec. grease remembering it could find its way into the motor thru' the g/box output bearing seal at the opposite end.

Sorry I cant be more helpful at this stage.
