Can someone clarify for me how I am meant to check my oil level?

I did a search but canna find the right threads ( must be a numpty I know)

I remember it being something about engine hot and on a paddock stand, is that correct?

Cheers

Here’s what I did. Do this after the next oil change. After changing the oil, start the bike let her run a few minutes. Park her on the side stand check where the oil is on your dipstick while sitting on the side stand. Use a file and make a mark at the oil level. Now it’s easy to check the oil WITHOUT having to put you bike on a paddock stand.

I have a paddock stand, so level is no problem, also I wanted to know how to do it properly so I could then mark my dipstick with the bike on sidestand to make it a little simpler for the future.

Thanks to those who replied, and cheers to Biker for finding the link that evaded my (obviously) feeble search attempts.
