Modern day syntetic oil

So the problem is that no one knows the answer to the question about whether or not oil (synthetic or otherwise) breaks down after time alone. I have a Big Dog at my Florida house that I only visit three times per year and maybe put 100-200 miles on the puppy each time. at most, this comes to 300-600 miles per year so that I should only have to change out the synthetic oil every ten years at most?? Seems crazy to me!
I'm going to go to the Mobil 1 site and ask the question.
 

Let me tell you what I know.

In the Army, they conduct AOAP (oil analysis) of all vehicles. I've seen all kinds of equipment forgo regularly scheduled oil changes (with dino oil) due to the AOAP's coming back with satisfactory results. Oil change periods are definitely stretched out over longer periods as a result. And that saves money; on a vast scale for the Army; as a result of the oil testing.

Synthetic oil? Would be even better. Sometimes we think too hard about something so simple...

However, oil can lose it's shear properties over time, through use... but in the case of your Big Dog (which you should post a pic of... I love choppers) you have nothing to worry about... especially with the minimal mileage you're accruing on it.
 
The best I can get out of Mobil is that they say the shelf life of their synthetic oil is five years! I did not get any response about the life in the crankcase.
 
I would think the biggest problem would stem from crankcase condensation..you know, those know it all Harley riders (like my buddy)that starts their bikes up in the garage for 5 minutes once a week and then shuts it down..I've been telling him for years that he's doing more harm than good, but he won't listen..dumbass

You just feel a bit different riding a chopper like this. You just have a "King of the Road" feeling because of the attitude and sound of the beast. Not for cross country rides (although far more comfortable than it looks) but I will never let it go. The first owner kept it in perfect shape as am I ...Never un-garaged, all maintenance documented and not a scratch on the paint or chrome...perfect!
It is just a motorcycle in the best sense of the word and I love it! Torque, sound, attitude and beauty! It is a black and chrome rolling work of art to my eyes. I wax it...stare at it and wax it again!...You crazies know what I mean!

I KNOW what you mean Zen... when I test rode that Ridgeback late last summer/fall.... I felt like I was King of the Road. Everyone staring; the thunder emanating from it... the swagger.... etc.

One day I will have me a chopper like that. :whistle:

Do it while you can appreciate it! I am old and I should have bought one before! Just a different feeling to ride these beasts! Put a 3/4 helmet on, a pair of jeans and sunglasses and you are ready to take on the planet!
The Big Dogs are very hard to find with low mileage and in excellent condition but, if you stumble upon a great one, it is magic.
Also installed a Dakota Digital speedo and an HD Daymaker LED (black) headlamp in the puppy.
I hate it when they are overdone with crazy graphics and chrome doodads....spikes and skulls, etc.
This is elegant and makes its point without being garish.
