is it possible to see where a member lives . state/city no actual address just a general location so a newbie can find other members close to them?

Not so much. I do not believe there is for instance a search you can do based on location without access to the database and the members table. That and the members do not always get very specific as to their locations. Any location info provided by the members is displayed next to any posts they make. The best option would be to come right out and ask if there are any members in your area.
2 Tone, the best thing for you to do is to go with us to Maggie Valley and there you can ask everybody personally, that's what i did, these are a great bunch of guys and girls, people you have never seen before treat you like you are part of their family!
