I hope I´m not intruding on you folks from downunder... My son is in Melbourne with his girlfriend right now. Their plan is to work in Australia for a year. Anyway, he´s thinking he wants to buy a car. I know a few things about cars but nothing of the market and brands you drive. Could anyone be supportive with advice to him? He´s a good kid, 25 years old, great bartender but, shall we say, not so handy with vehicles?

Maybe one of the Melbourneites wil chime in I am over 10 hours drive from there, but it will really depend on wether he wants something to just drive around Melbourne or if he wants to explore Auss

He won't need a car if he's in inner city or coastal Melbourne for a while - public transport is great down there.
Here Ford is Ford, Chev/GM/Opal/Vauxhall is Holden, Toyota is Toyota etc.
Plenty of options but it's still expensive to own and insure a car here.
Unless he needs a daily driver - consider a rental when required. Can't believe how cheap they can be if you look around.

Thankyou for your replies. He called me today and had alot of questions of wich I could´nt answer one, he could maybe use some advice. They will travel on to other places later on, thats why he´s considering bying a car.

Buy something that has lots of rego left and make sure a roadworthy is included.
Avoid European vehicles as spares etc are expensive.
Maybe consider joining one of the auto clubs as they can help with purchase inspections.
Check the vin number on the online database to ensure it is not stolen or has outstanding debt attached etc.

Also the average Aussie clocks up about 15 to 20 K a year. The higher the k's the less its worth so expect older cars to have high k's on them.

Cheers

Al

Hi all.

Thank you for your input.

From what I gather from reading online is that the most common car to buy (talking low budget) is a Ford Falcon.

I’m here with my girlfriend for a year, the plan is to get around the country in a vehicle, preferably something that can also be used to sleep in when driving long distances. We are looking for a stationwagon or similar for this purpose.

We are currently in Melbourne, VIC. It is a pain in the bum to sort out rego and RWC. I read somewhere that RWC is not necessary in VIC and somewhere else I read that it is illegal to buy/sell cars in Oz without RWC. But, every advert on gumtree claims to have rego for different amount of times but it’s impossible to find a car with RWC. Why?

What would you recommend us to buy? We are looking at a budget ranging up to $3000 AUD and we don’t need much.

Where and how do I sort rego if it doesn’t come with that? How does it work with RWC? Is it necessary by law in VIC? How much does it cost to get a RWC?

Thanks a million guys!

Any cars sold without a RWC are sold without for a reason , basically going to need coin spent on it to get it to RWC state so rego can be transferred into new owners name ( transfer also costs money i think it's around $50 for every $1000 of purchase price , a 3k car would require $150 transfer fee.

My recommendations are do not what so ever buy a car without RWC , dont buy from dealers/car yards , here's a couple of links to get them started

A RWC has a limit lifespan and cost so people try to sell without them.

If the rego has expired when you re register it it will continue from the expiry date not the re rego date unless the plates were handed in. (avoid a vehicle with expired rego )

You will not be able to transfer rego or re-register without a RWC.

I would not purchase any vehicle if they will not supply a RWC.

The forms needed to transfer rego are available online or from a RTA office.

This is for Victoria only as different rules apply in different states.

Also for what state do you have a drivers license as it is expected that the vehicle is registered in the state you live.

Mitsubishi Magna - Wikipedia

Best value is likely a 3.5 litre V6 Mitsubishi Magna front wheel drive Station-wagon which has coil springs on rear axle not the independent suspension used on the sedan. The sedan version were exported in significant numbers as Mitsubishi Diamante sedans to the USA. Many AA type organisation's roadside service will confirm that they had much lower rates of roadside breakdown than Ford Falcons or Holden Commodores which they competed with. They have an excellent cruise control system and will give reasonable fuel economy and quite a few will be available with LPG gas conversions while still able to run on gasoline as well. They even had factory versions with dedicated LPG set ups as many were sold as sales rep vehicles. I have three, TJ 2003 and TL 2004 AWD sedans and a TH 1999 Station-wagon. The luxury version was the Verada which also came in a station wagon but are much rarer. They are KH, KJ, KL, and KW models that match the magna model types below with a K instead of a T in front.

You may even get a good TW/TL wagon for $3000 registered for a reasonable period. I bought my TH 1999 wagon for under AUD$800 (US$600) with 7 months registration and compulsory 3rd party injury NOT property insurance. It had 230,000km 143,000 miles when purchased ( I have lent it to various friends for 3 years and it has done at least 30,000 km since.

TH 2000, TJ 2001-2003, 2004 TL 2005 TW look identical and were the last made

Do not buy earlier models as there is no need and they had 3.0 V6 or 2.4litre 4cyl which are well past their use by date DESIGN AND RELIABILITY WISE.

I KNOW A DEALER/wrecker/ service and custom modifier WHO SPECIALISES IN THEM in MELBOURNE AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A GOOD ONE. (Bloody caps key_) I have never bought a car from him but did drive mine 500mile from Canberra to Melbourne to get him to service it and change the belts which are need to be done every 100, 000 km Something to check for if service records available which may well be the case. Manual 5 speed would be the pick as they are robust boxes and not anywhere near as dependant on correct servicing over vehicle life. Autos should be flushed and oil changed every 30,000 which often does not occur.
