I lift mine with a motorcycle jack, and cut 2x4" with two flipped over iron lift bracket pieces; that Xhdskip made a long time ago for us (I can't use them normally because the holes on my bottom frame that they go into; are too small).
Here's a pic of my Rocket lifted in this manner. Kind of hard to see how I have the 2x4" on the left lift arm of the jack; but if you have one of these Sears motorcycle lifts; you'll will see how to position it.
Each end of the 2x4" makes contact with the bottom frame's two lugs; towards the rear of the engine's sump. I use the steel brackets Xhdskip made; on each end of the 2x4 to keep the lugs from digging in to the wood.
The jack stands are just there as an afterthought (under the swingarm) since I had my bike lifted overnight; while it was getting a new tire mounted on the wheel.
