Is there that big a difference?

The Touring has the exact same engines, cams, intake, etc, it's detuned through the ECU, easily retuned to full horsepower with TuneECU (free download) or Tuneboy, surprised no one has said this?

Has anyone actually done it ? I've heard it has a completely different ecu. Is it even compatible with tuneboy / tuneecu ?

R3 and R3T

I have both a 2005 standard and a 2008 Touring and believe me it's like day and night difference in riding the bikes. The Touring is much more comfortable. It rides much softer yet handles as well or better. The standard is much quicker. I have both set up much the same and the standard is more of a hot rod. But installing Jardines and a ECU MAP/PCIII brought the Touring model to life. It runs well enough now that I think I'm really to let my standard go. One way to look at it is the standard is more like riding in a Mustang and the Touring is like riding in a Lincoln. Of course this is my opinion. Bike evaluations are subjective.

i've never had interest in the touring

but i sure enjoy my 08 classic. i have just over 4k miles on it, and it's got enough to scare the hell out of me if i whack the throttle full open. it'll either squall the rear tire or lift the front wheel, depending on whether you're leaning forward or sitting back. the classic is a 2 tone paint scheme with floorboards and a bit more chrome. the touring is plenty torquey, but lacks the adrenaline rush of the classic and standard, as far as i can tell. i really like my "gorilla bike".

I have an 08 R3T.Put the Gipro on,added the full Jardine exhaust system and a KnN filter under the seat.Completely satisfied with performance and sounds.Perhaps next year a tune-boy and the triple filters..need more money..not more ideas!!

Yes, with Jardines and triple filters, and TuneECU, mine has a 150 hp, 150 ft lb tune. I could probably do even better with a Dyno tune.

Bob Carpenter just tune a touring with his brute pipe on it to just a wee bit over 165 hp he used tune boy only. The guy's face hurts now.
Yes the ecu's are different between the standard/classics and the touring in fact the touring and the Roadster have the same ecu with the exception of the roadster's 2011 and up ecu's having stuff in it to do with the ABS system.

Thanks for the post, I too think the touring handles better because of the back tire on the other one. I called today about seeing it again tomorrow and it is supposedly gone. There were some questionable things about it financially as it was financed from some company out west and they hold the title. I did not get a warm/fuzzy about it anyway after hearing about that.

You and I are pretty close, I am surprised we have not ran into each other as I ride Southern IL quite often going to Garden of the Gods and Old Shawneetown.

Elvis, the motors are identical. The difference lies in their factory tunes. The R3T can be retuned via TuneBoy to make as much or more power than a stock Classic and with the addition of a Carpenter Brute exhaust it will make about 165 ft. lbs torque and an equal amount of horsepower, while weighing about 60 pounds lighter. Cost is about $2,000.
