I did something dumb the other day...
I always pull my screen down by removing the top two bolts on the fork mounts and loosening the the bottom two and then fold it down so I can get the gauge cluster to stay up when lifting the tank. (because removing the last two bolts is just too hard...)
I've positioned the full screen in just the right way that it clears the headlights and rests about 1/2" above the front fender so there's no contact with the center screw in the middle of the screen on the paint.
Well, I had it all torn down in my driveway and a delivery truck needed to keep going forward around my loop to get out but I was in the way so I dropped the tank, tossed the seat on and was going to move it a bit so he could get around.
I fired it up, moved it into my grass and shut her down and went back to work.
When I was buttoning it all up, I noticed a 2" scrape in the paint.
I hit little bumps and that 1/2" gap wasn't enough to keep the screw off the paint.
Stupid.
Oh well, gives it personality.

You just have to live and let live. I just got my bike painted, and I know of at least two nicks that I put into the brand newly painted parts just during the reassembly. One on the oil tank, and another on the trunk.
There will be many more once I get some serious miles on her. Enjoy the trunk, get over the scratches. Get out and ride.

I went to wipe off the dust of the tank of my sprint when I still had it, grabbed a microfiber towel, and sprayed some mothers detailer on the tank made one swipe and cringed as it left a white streak on the blue, there was a tiny sliver of metal from another project imbeded into the rag and it was like taking a knife blade accross the tank..

Icappel where are you? If you are in SoCal we could trade for day. My bike is getting so Nasty that yours will seem absolutely pristine by comparison and after I have been on yours for a day it will probably have enough new scratches that you will be able to completely forget the scratch you put in! :twisted: :twisted: Just trying to help!! :lol: :lol:
This bike is all about the ride. Enjoy it. Save your pennies and then repaint it every 5 or 10 years! :lol: :lol:
Juggernaut, I broke the rectifier bracket on my '70 Bonnie and the replacement (which is a "Z" shaped tab) looks like it should go on one way, but that is the opposite. So after installing it in the incorrect (opposite) position, I was washing the bike and noticed with horror that the BRAND NEW PAINT on my Front Fender now has 3 small DENTS with associated scratches because the fender can now contact the Rectifier at full compression of the forks! Dooh!!

I was the same way until I rode the Rock into a ditch while scraping the peg feeler off.

It turns out that my non-OEM windshield mount would it the thank on each side at full lock. I had no idea I was doing it. Every time I turned the wheel to full stop in either direction, it scraped a little more paint, and dinged in the metal a bit more.
The dings were repaired with the paint job, but I felt pretty stupid. That said, I didn't let it keep me from enjoying the heck out of the ride.
