Ignition buzz in BT headset

Does anyone have an idea why I get ignition buzz in my Sena BT headset even when it's switched off. I'm sure it's ignition noise because when I shut off the throttle it stops. The same set up was fine on my old BMW could it be a faulty HT lead? I thought I'd ask here before talking to the dealer about it.

Check your spark plug type includes an "R" eg DPR8EA-9 (R for Resistor). Originals should be right but if you've changed them or switched to Iridium they could be the wrong type. Just something you can check yourself.

Thanks. They should be right, only ever maintained by triumph dealer. Another thought struck me, it might not be ignition, doesn't the note vary when it's that? This is constant. Fuel pump suppression perhaps? I really don't know.

Okay, I paid a visit to the dealer and they confirm that plugs are correct. The mechanic put it on the diagnostics m/c and said all is functioning normally. I still have the problem and it is becoming a little irritating. It is definitely ignition noise as it rises and falls with the speed of the engine even though the BT headset is off. I'm assuming that the ignition suppression is not working or inadequate. Does anyone know of a solution?

Im having trouble understanding what you are talking about.. you can hear buzzing through your bluetooth headset even while its off? I have a Sena as well and I can't imagine why it would make any sound related to the motor....

It sounds like unsuppressed ignition noise being induced into my sena headset even with it switched off. This was not an issue on my previous bike a BMW R1200 GS. If you imagine an old car with dodgy spark plug leads and you have your AM radio tuned between stations it sounds similar to that.

Electromagnetic induction - It's possible but you'd need to very unfortunate to have enough to make headphones buzz via dead circuits. Can you unplug the headphones from the Sena? - It is possible that the headphone cable is acting as an antenna. I've seen it happen. Can be as simple as the HT leads and the headphone cable lengths being in synergy.

If it's harmonious reception - Shielding the wires is pretty much the ONLY solution. - The ones in the LID. Tinfoil, or wire braid - but ime it's going to be a trial and error deal.

I'd NOT attempt to shield the HT leads. But you could. You'd be best fibreglass wrapping those before shielding and you need to earth the shields.

Okay first experiment was to cut strips of aluminium baking foil and wrap it around the wires on my Sena SMH5. It was a bit crude and I didn't cover all the wiring. However, I reassembled the cheek pads into my helmet, put it on and started the bike engine. First impression is that the buzz is greatly reduced if not eliminated! I took it for a short ride up the road and while there was some sort of noise the annoying ignition buzz has gone.

Next step it to improve it and my idea was to strip a length of Satellite Coax cable and use the copper braid. Unfortunately it wont expand enough to go over the mic and earpieces. That said, the aluminium layer below it is tubular with a slit along it's length. When I get a moment I'll strip the helmet again and fit the 'tube' and tape it in place. I'll let you know here when it's done and hopefully it'll be a success.
