Hey, it seems, after wading through the many posts about the idol/stall problem on the Rocket 3, that there are many causes. And fixes.
I just thought I would make a new post here to quickly summarise this problem, the different ways that it can be fixed (And how my fathers one was fixed) and things to check. (Some people on here seem real desperate and even close to flogging their Rocket!)
MY PROBLEM:
To start, my fathers Rocket was idoling poorly from last January. It was intermittent, but had slowly degraded until every time he would idol and slow down, it would cough and splutter, then eventually stall.
We replaced the spark plugs, as our triumph dealership (the one we dealt with at the time, before we changed dealers [Long story]) told us to do so. This had NO effect whatsoever.
We thought it might have been a poor tuneboy map, since we had a supercharger fitted and new exhaust pipes. This seemed scary because my dad is a whizz with mechanics, but when it comes to mapping and all this new 21st century technology, he gets phased! The mapping was perfect and completed by a top engine man!
MY FIX:
The engine man, who was coincidently the same guy who set up our supercharger, carried out diagnostics on the bike. It turned out the HT leads needed replacing. They had appeared to have worn I think. This happened to a mate of my dad as well, when his bike was just under the age of my dads (Which is just over a year and 2 months).
OTHER FIXES: The following is a list of other fixes which I have identified on the site, which may help anyone else to narrow down the problem. Don't feel alone on this problem, as afterall, it is only mechanical and if-the-worst-came-to-the-worst, parts can be replaced. Its a great bike and worth the effort.
1) Primary throttle sensors / Secondary throttle sensors failed.
2) Broken / Poor HT leads (Pack of 6, £90 approx).
3) Defective, poor tuneboy mapping. Not updated for Low speeds, 1 person, passengers, idol, new exhausts fitted, turbo/supercharger fitting etc.
4) Adjust idol screw (it might have been adjusted by Triumph or engineers (Obviously don't adjust if its an intermittent problem.)
5) Drowned / blown / old spark plugs (Approx £10, depends on brand)
6) Damaged / worn spark plug coils.
7) Throttle wiring too tight?
Triumphs policy is to initially tell you its a spark plug or coil problem. However, it could be a number of reasons why. Even new bikes can have this trouble, especially with HT leads it seems. But I and many others are confident there are probably other reasons out there. Just these are some of them.
Cheers
