Handlebar Adjustment Question

Mine are adjusted about the same and I'm pretty happy with them. I've thought about getting the Rivco riser, but the handlebars are prett close to where I like when I ride with just the fly screen, which is most of the time. If I rode with the Roadster screen more often, I'd probably go ahead and get the risers, since I tend to sit more upright.

I read in another post that putting the Rivco risers makes it a pain in the backside to lift the tank when necessary.

Personally I managed to roll my handlebars (Standard R3 2008) about an inch. Does the job pretty well for me. Just have to be careful not to roll them so far back that they make contact with the tank when turning them to max.

I'm 5' 8" with not a lot of reach. Rolling back an inch made it so I can sit up straight if I want to.

I have a simular problem. I would like to raise my handlebars up a little. My bike fell over and the handlebars dented my tank. Now when I go to turn they hit the tank on both sides. How do you loosen up the handlebars to raise them.

Thanks

I fitted Classic bars to my Touring, plus Rivco risers, one of the best mods I did to the bike, very comfortable now, I didn't like the bent wrist angle of stock.
I don't think clearance (after a cursery look) is an issue on my bike (touring model), as the tank is flatter than the R3 or R3C. I thought of rolling them back a hair, but I kind of like the height, just wish they were back about an 1/2" to 1". I'm 5'10" so it's not a big deal, but I do feel a hair stretched in the arms.

Of course, I could try hanging by my arms from the pull-up bar at the gym for an hour or two. ;)

I moved my Roadster bars back an inch and it made a tremendous difference to comfort. Had to check nothing touched but there's enough clearance from lock to lock. You may want to adjust the angle of the switchgear/levers too.

Not true, it's easy to do on the Touring. The tank easily moves past the bars/risers. There's not a massive amount of clearance, but there is clearance. Not sure what it does to the standard/Roadster.

The Rivco risers are outstanding for me, the one inch rise allowed me to angle the bars down considerably more which gave me a near-perfect wrist angle (the upright position of the bars was horrible for my wrists). The 2 inches back further relaxes the seating position.

Or when the forks are compressed from a large pot hole or coming down from a wheelie, they will go down far enough to make contact with the tank at the stock setup, rolling them back even more so.

What?

The handlebars?

The handlebars are rigidly mounted to the triple tree, which is rigidly mounted to the frame. Everything that moves is below the triple tree, namely the forks. The bars have exactly the same clearance to the tank when the forks are compressed fully or extended fully.

Also, I severely doubt the forks have enough travel to allow the fender to contact the radiator, that would be a massive design flaw.

Are you, to quote the British, taking the piss? :p

There are two round chrome plugs in the holes where the bars are attached to the bike. Very carefully put something under the edge of the chrome plug and lever it loose, it's a small chrome plastic insert/plug that covers the holes only. Once you do, you will find four normal bolts underneath, just loosen those, adjust the bars, fasten and re-insert the chrome covers you removed in step one.

Get the risers. They do exactly what you want - height goes up one inch, but if you roll the bars back to a more comfortable angle you get about the same height, just nicer angle and 2 inches closer to you. We're about the same height and the change with risers was perfect for me. There's a used pair for sale right next to this post too. Keep in mind the Touring has different risers to the Standard/Roadster so buy the right model.

I got the risers on my Roadster , to lift the tank I have to remove the bars but it's not that big a job once you've done it a few times.

Yep, I've said it before, the Touring is substantially different to the Roadster/Standard in many ways. The entire rear-end, much of the front-end, and a fair bit in between. No such issue on the Touring.
