It may also be the detente mechanism for the gear selector. If the spring is not pulling the mechanism freely then it would make hear changes difficult. If that is the problem then you will have to remove the front engine cover and the clutch basket to get to it. This is a few hours work, but you will also need a special tool to remove the clutch basket. Try the simple external things first though.
