What's up Rocket 3 owners? I have been searching the threads and found many post about brake repair, upgrading etc. What I cannot find and need to know is how do you remove the front brake rotors from the wheel? My 2005 Standard has headless bolts or what looks like closed rivets securing the rotors to the wheel. I purchased the R3 in Nov. 2014 with 1270 miles on it. The dealer replaced the 9 year old tires before I picked it up for my 350 mile trip back home. The brakes worked great untill 8days ago the front started squealing. Upon checking I found the rotor blades very loose side to side & up and down. Can anyone tell me how to change to front brake rotors? I have already checked the service manual. It simply states remove the bolts but not what tool or method.

I'm not sure you have a problem. The front brakes kind of like to sing some. I fixed my singing by replacing the pads with EBC HH Sintered pads. Be warned ... they work WAAAY better than the stock pads. The rotors are the floating design. They are attached by eyelets to the inner part that bolts to the wheel hub. The actual pad clamping part of the rotor is made to move but really shouldn't have much movement you can move with your hand. I'm sure one of the other more technical guys will be along shortly.

The rotor blades can be moved with two fingers, side to side, and rotated front to rear very easily and by a large amount. There is a knock when first applying the brake. The squeal is sometimes like a train stopping. I already purchasd new EBC pads & rotors, but the bolts holding the rotors to the wheel are not hex or torx etc.

as said they are floating discs and are meant to move as the calipers are fixed, opposite to rear fixed rotor floating caliper when the front rotors stop moving is when you have trouble (they will rub excessively and the rotors will glow red warp ) if your unsure take a look at BMW floating disc you'd think there going fall off the wheel.

I'll just comment strictly on the squealing - it can happen to any disc brake. It's vibration and often caused by worn-out pads or a disc that has lots of brake residue causing it to be uneven. Thorough cleaning can alleviate it, or even a very fine-grit sand paper applied judiciously to smooth things out.

The rotors are meant to move. Unless you're getting a lot of shaking while braking or a sort of grab and release feel, there's nothing wrong with them. It is possible for there to be excessive play but it's pretty rare under normal conditions. Squealing can be reduced or eliminated by giving the calipers, pistons and pads a good clean.

like every one said on my o7 i bought at 6000 miles and they were loose at 26000 they are still loose so if you put on a new one they would still be loose.
just my opinion that the rivets your talking about i think that might be a little chrome cover with the bolts under it.

The rotor has floating buttons but they should be connecting the rotor to an inner hub that bolts to the wheel with hex drive bolts. I put aftermarket galfers on my bike and they came with the floating buttons connected to an inner hub. Those hex bolts have to be there. How else would you remove the rotors? Check the tightness of the hexbolts on the wheel hub.

yow yours have bolts?
i would assume you replace the wheel or you remove the little chrome things might a bolt under neath it or maybe you just have to drill it out.:(
