You will never get high temp paint to hold up on headers. I’ve tried it on a Bonneville T120 with black pipes that had browned off on the top bend. Ceramic coating is the only treatment that holds up, and even then it goes off over time ie goes dull and loses colour.
You can get any exhaust to glow red regardless of a:f. My Rocket headers would sometimes get a faint glow if I’d been riding hard (but always within the speed limit…..) If anything that bike was running a tad rich.
This was a stock standard air cooled 2014 Scrambler revving at about 2000 rpm for just a couple of minutes in my garage. Bike was pretty new and tune was factory, so perhaps a little lean.
