ENgine Noise

I read a number of previous posts regarding a "rattle can" noise in the engine. I am not sure if any conclusion was firmly drawn as to what the cause or if it is normal. My 2005 R3 with 7K miles has a clatter when under acceleration. It does not clatter if you gently accelerate. This noise begins to occur between 2 and 3K rpm and only when under a load. It does not occur on deceleration or spinning up the engine while in neutral. I am not sure if this is the "rattle can" noise that was discussed at length in previous emails. I am thinking that it may just be intake noise. Thought I would test the water and ask the experts! :wink:

I would like to think this is normal and there is nothing unusual going on in the engine. Aside from the noise, the bike runs like a clock.

Any thoughts?

You just described my bike to a tee. I'm not an expert but thought I would chime in. Bike runs great 8.5K miles. The only thing I can come up with is that we are sitting on a bigger than normal engine and just hearing the workings.
 
Must disagree on the "normality" of the noise.
Don't know if it is harmful or not, but all my many years of general mechanical knowledge says it's not normal & a potential problem.
Test rode 3 different Rockets, 2 new and 1 used, no rattle of any sort at any engine speed or load. Just cranked up a new '06 and it was as quiet as a church mouse!
Triumph of Daytona has mine torn down "looking" for the noise {still under factory warranty :wink: } but as of Monday 6/4 they haven't found it.
I'll visit it this weekend and of course, report my findings here. 8)
 
Tropic, you wrote that you started up an 06 and it was quiet. Did you ride it or put in under load? I had my engine taken apart for a new engine casing at about 4700 miles. Mechanic found noting out of the ordinary. Bike made the noise before and after the tear down. Mine is also quiet when I crank it up no rattle at all. Will be waiting your reply on the status of your bike. Hopefully they can find out something about the rattle.
 
I've got nearly 20,000 miles on mine and it has had the paint can rattle from the start with no other apparent problems...knock on wood :wink:
 
No I did not ride it or put the engine under load. It was a new bike with less tha 50 miles on it. The other R3's I have ridden in the past were loaded well :twisted: and no rattle at all. My '05 exibited lots of rattling at anything above an idle, actually you hear it a bit at an idle! NO rattle at any engine RPM on the new bike.
My '05 runs great {before the idle problem cropped up!} so the rattle is not harming performance at all. With my quiet stock exhaust the rattle is the dominant sound coming from my engine. The term "paint can rattle" is a good description of the noise.
I don't know if I am being a bit of a weenie about the rattle noise but this is not my first rodeo, I've been around! The rattle my bike has aint normal, that I'm sure of!
I dearly love the unique looks and totally awesome performance of this bike but this engine noise really concerns me. I am VERY hopeful that Triumph can take care of this problem and I can ride it with confidence like I should be able too!
We'll see soon.

I put 16,000 miles on the Valk within the last year and I plan on putting a bunch on my Rocket also!
Harley hunting is getting boring. I want sport bikes now!!

Guys I was talking with Miami Dave the other day and I've got a thought. We were talking about modding my bike and he mentioned the removal of the secondaries (butterflys) and how it made his throttle response much better, but the engine noise increased... Hears my thought, have them look at the throttle bodies and see if the secondaries are OK. You might have one that flutters. Although not likely, if nothing else works, look to the unlikely.
 
Update

Well...., I have been doing a bit more riding and listening. I do not think the noise I was describing is the infamous "paint can" rattle. I think it is injector or intake noise. My guess is, it is quite normal. I am going to take to the dealer for a listen anyway but I think it is OK. I may take another R3 for a spin to compare as well.

I also did hear what I believe is referred to as the "paint can" rattle. I gave it a few revs in neutral (nothing aggressive mind you) and upon decceleration I heard the infamous rattle. Sounds just like a paint can being shaken. It was very slight. Personally, I do not think that is anything to worry about either. Sounded something like a tappett needing oil or a timing chain slapping (hmmmm.... better check my oil! :wink: )

As an aside...

Everytime I get on the bike I am in awe. This is truly an amazing bike!
