So i was reviewing the service manual for just general steps to adjust valves. Since you have to remove the cams has anyone replaced the camshafts with performance cams?. If so was it worth it. I know the biggest bang per buck is intake exhaust and tune ecu. But just curious if aftermarket cams are available and what all is required?

Plenty of captains with the cam upgrade, go to carpenterracing.com and look at the wonders they can do with a Rocket, I have what I will call the carpenter stage 1 kit it has the cam, valves, heavy duty clutch springs re-tuned ECU with that it puts out 210hp with the correct exhaust, or you can go all out and also get the pistons which will put it over 260hp with the correct exhaust and tune.

210+ Horsepower Package

Includes:
• CNC Ported Head
• Custom-Ground Proprietary Cam
• Slotted Adjustable Cam Sprockets
• 12 Custom, Shim-Under Tappets
• Custom Titanium Retainers
• Custom Valve Springs
• Custom Clutch springs

This is what carpenter racing does for the 210hp (not including exhaust) just putting the cams in would be like putting free flowing pipes with the stock headers.

i don't think u have to remove cam to check and replace shims.
i think rocket scientist posted info on a tool he made.

Cams alone will net very little, without already having intake and exhaust opened up
plus you'd likely mess up your valves and shim/bucket train without upgrading them too to be able for more aggressive csms

As R-II-R says open up the exhaust and inlet first. However the second bit he says is off a little. I do street cams designed to work in a stock engine, with stock valve train etc.

I was thinking of my cams,, are your street cams drop in or must be dialled in?

Well i wouldn swap out a camshaft for the heck of it but if i had to take it out to replace shims might as well put a performance cam back in as most of the cost of uogrades is labor and it would cost the same to install a stock camshaft as an upgraded one.
