‘06 R3 Classic
New to R3 and NOT, I repeat NOT a mechanic.
Just got a 2006 Classic with the factory exhaust (w/cats) removed and an aftermarket setup put on. It looks like the D & D slip ons.

The situation: Backfiring when I let off the throttle... a lot of small backfires. I am unsure whether this was the desired result, normal for this exhaust system, or if I need valves (or something else) adjusted.

Anybody have any thoughts to share? Ease my ignorant mind?

It is probably running too lean, either it wasn't retuned (ECU reprogrammed for more fuel per amount air), or retuned incorrectly. Tune ECU is freeware available on the net, all that is required is a $20 cable. Or maybe your dealer could load TORS tune, although I'm unsure how well that would work with D&Ds.

Edit: or possibly an air leak in the muffler connections could also cause popping?

this is the exhaust with only two pipes on one side? If so mine was tuned a dealer for TORS and was constantly popping on decel, the tor tune I think assumes a cat box in place. I switched to a tune for jardines and its been bliss since.

Might be wrong about D&D

It's got two pipes on one side and one pipe on the other... so I could be mistaken about whether this is the D7D set-up or not.
I'll do some checking, but if someone knows an easy way to get one of those cables for retuning... any suggestions are welcome.... for that matter, how does one locate the freeware mentioned above?

Sounds like TORS to me good sounding pipes just need the right map installed.

You need to enrichen the mixture at zero throttle at the rpm ranges giving you the backfiring. In other words, not at what rpm you are going when you shut the throttle and increase fuel flow at those rpms. I had to do the same with my Jars. Easy with a PC III.
