I have the Utopia Driver Backrest on my 2008 and am very happy with it. Install was easy. Getting the seat to re-lock is a little odd, but that may have more to do with my installation than the product. I'd buy it again. Couple hundred bucks, but keeps me from moving around when on the throttle.
Shouldn't be too hard to get hold of a pillion pad and modify the mount to run vertically instead of back. Then get your backrest custom made. If it was me I'd want it adjustable for reach.
By the way 2013r3roadster, did you try the backrest set right back? It's far from upright in that position. There's 5 settings on mine and I have it on 2 or 3 (from the front) normally.
You could get hold of an old pillion seat , strip it and cut off the mounting section(where it screws to the fender) fab up an upright bracket, weld it to the mounting section and mount a backrest onto it ( sure i'm not the only one that's swapped the stock backrest for the larger Classic one) must be a few laying around. Just have to make sure you had the angle right..easy peasy
Just remember that Ponters had used the base of the pillion seat to mount his rack .. thought it was a very clever idea BTY i'm loving the riders back rest i just got hold of .. funny i always thought it was an ' Goldwing thing' realise now it turns the riders seat into a f#ckin cockpit and makes you ride even faster and corner heaps harder .. does me anyway!!
