I just got back from a trip from Phoenix to Salt Lake City and back. I mounted a scanguage on my R3T a couple of months back and left it mounted for the trip.
The range of operating temperatures was rather interesting. Normal coolant temperature seems to be around 195. Running at around 65 in ambient temperatures below 50 the temp will run from 191 to 195. Above 75 or so it jumps to 197.
Now, when I got back to Phoenix this afternoon the ambient temperature was 110. Running down the freeway at 65-80 the water temperature fluctuated from 202 to 210. The higher temperatures mostly happen when following traffic. Clean air cools better. The Intake Air Temperature was reading 137 degrees. After just a couple of quick stoplights before hitting my driveway the temperature was reading 222, with the fan running of course.
The Temperature warning light never came on, and without the Scangauge I'd of course have no idea what the actual temperature was. Except for the feeling of straddling a Weber Grill. I had the headers Jet Hot coated and that really reduced the heat they give off. But, the heat from the radiator and the engine itself will still cook body parts.
It seems to me that the cooling system is barely adequate. As soon as you come up behind another vehicle the temperature rises. And, any hill will cause an immediate 2-4 degree increase in temperature.
I'm wondering what I'm going to do when summer starts in another week. Then it will really start to get hot. Maybe a custom radiator???
