Clutch adjustment/issue

I can see the bits making the clutch grab. I am curious to the shape of the steels? I'm not sure if Barnett sells just the fibers or not. Nev has mentioned that the clutch kit is pretty good and well thats good enough for me. I doubt there spring are much if any stronger or that you grip will notice a difference.

I have been researching clutch springs looking for an improvement in engagement pressure for my drag racing. My OEM springs are doing a good job no slipping after 3 seasons. What I have learned so far is EBC springs are weak and softer than OEM. They are considered the worst. However their fiber clutch plates are said to be the best. Barnett are said to be generally good stuff. I have installed their springs and fiber plates in other motorcycles I have owned over the years with good results and not that much harder clutch lever pull. Some are questioning the quality of their clutch plates today because they see some loose flack that needs to be cleaned off before installing. I don't know about that myself. Barnett only sells their springs in a clutch kit with plates. The strongest clutch springs are made by Carpenter Racing. Some say you do feel the extra pull in the clutch lever with them.

I think if you need new plates and springs you would be happy with the Barnett kit.

I have over 30,000 with a barnett kit. No issues. Stock clutch plates and fibers were fine but springs were shot after last round of mild upgrades. Pull on clutch a little harder but not bad.

Thanks guys, wasn’t sure about the springs rate for the Barnett kit but was only asking in case they were too heavy, nothing wrong with originals.

I decided to follow the advice given and just buy the Barnett kit, rather than just friction plates

@warp9.9 the steels towards the back where the friction plates were gunged up were slightly blue but all looked in good condition, what am I looking for? I’ll see if any of them are exhibiting signs and post some pictures. Although I am pretty much sorted it’s always useful info for others in the future.

Question, what exactly does the small round clutch cover with 3 bolts and the thick rubber gasket behind it actually do? Seeing the word gasket, I ordered one with the one for the main casing but now wonder what the hell it does at all it wasn’t expensive, about 8 quid.

Its a vibration damper and adds a little stability to the cover where the lifter shaft goes thru. You do not need to change the lifter piece or shaft. I am curious as to what it haf fir washers on thr backside of the lifterpiece like the wavey washer.

I will double check but think it just had the wavy washer, nothing else. This washer looked new, it was painted blue and had hardly lost any of the paint. Will take a couple of pics when the Barnett Kit comes and I am fitting it.

I think we are referring to items 18, 19, 3(wavy washer) and 27 which is the thrust bearing and spacer arrangement.

Cool thats what I wanted to know. And in my opinion is all there should be. Its about useless as tits on a nun anyway. Its supposed to keep the lifter piece from completely blocking off the transmission input shaft. So oil flows thru. The thing is the lifter piece will not bottom out once the lifter shaft has scooped it up. Anyway thats where the lubrication for the pressure plate bearing comes from no matter which style clutch you have. There is also oil lubrication hole drilled perpendicular to thr input shaft center line that supply oil inside the clutch keep the finers and steels lubricated.

Fitted the Barnett kit, no issues, got her all back together and no leaks so I’m feeling rather smug (I do computers for a living, spannering does not come naturally to me).

Stuck it back with cable how it was and still drags a little but think the arm needs moving round a notch as it looks like it’s sort of topping out instead of levering (you get me? I can’t explain but will let you know if it sorts it).

Thanks for the picture. OH and did you soak your fibers in oil like over night? if not ya I can see the clutch being a little grippy but your idea can be valid. there should be a punch mark on the lifter shaft and the clutch actuating arm for alignment.
