At lowish revs, lowish load on engine but in (say) 2nd or 3rd gear. No other symptoms that I can think of. Gearbox seems OK other than the usual sometimes slipping out of 1st if not fully home. No paint can rattle. This drumming, throbbing noise seems to come from the back. it might always have been there. The only close description I can find is of a thumping noise that one poster says is a normal noise that comes from the torsional damper?
Any ideas welcome as the bike goes in for it's first 10k service soon.

While its in for service have them grease the drive shaft splines even if you have to pay for it. It will also force them into checking them out to see if they are ok.

Will be changing wheels before then (I've got a set away for powder coating). Are you saying they could be damaged and that's what's making the noise?
Thanks
Mike

No but I am eliminating the shaft and rear end but insuring yours gets lubricated plus that puts the rear end in their hands for more inspecting as they will most likely change the fluid also. Make them ride it as it could also be as simple as your break pads vibrating. Either wat you have 10k on her and if you don't lube the drive shaft splines you will when you have to replace the final drive and shaft. Of course this also lets you see if the output shaft of the engine is leaking. Plenty of pluses for lubricating the spline everytime you remove a wheel.

Interesting Warp thanks. Actually they are replacing the rear drive unit under warranty but only because the paint is peeling underneath. I would have been OK with a paint patch up job as it's a £1800 sealed unit, but I guess it may be cheaper for them to replace it than pay someone to paint it properly. So when they remove the rear diff, they will presumably be able to check anything higher up the drive chain. But at the moment they don't know they are looking for anything - should I ask them to check for anything in particular while the diff unit is off?
Thanks
Mike

just explain to them what your hearing so they can watch out for things it could be a bearing in the back or the break rotors and pads vibrating. of course with a new rear the noise might just go away.
