Cam and crank timming issues

Well, after my output shaft bearing failure, i was able to procure an update kit from Triumph thru my old dealer in Florida free of charge. (Thanks Dink!) Anyways, iv'e got the motor back together but am having an issue getting the crank and cams to time correctly. Seems like no matter what i try, the crank gear is always running about half a tooth retarded. With the cam fixture tool in place holding the cams and the crank gear on TDC, i cna't even get the cam chain to fit the gear. i end up having to rotate the crank back a bit to get the chain on the crank gear and end up about a tooth off. Any ideas out there? Thanks, Bigern2300

Do you think the cam chain maybe stretched?

Did you by chance mark where the dots were on the chain prior to removing it?

You don't have too much slack between the two cam gears?

It's just crazy...everything seems to line up. even manually checked TDC thru a spark plug hole. But once you apply the tensioner, it's back to being off half a tooth. The crank gear came with the update kit i guess due to breakage of the gear and what's funny is it had no line up "dot" for TDC just like the old one. I guess i'll take the cam chain out and check it for stretch.

Sounds like sound advice! I didn't have this problem the first time i had the motor down, so it's most likely a stretched chain. Thanks for the help!

Make sure you take out all the slack from the chain on the none tensioner side first. it must be tight. turn the cams a little with a spanner then slip it on to the crank sprocket.hold tight on to sprocket and insert tensioner .push in tensioner and its done

Just an update on the timming issue. I pulled the cam chain this evening and checked it for slack, and wow! I've seen logging chain with less slack than this! I might even be a tooth and a half off by the time everthing gets rollng. This at somewhere around 45,000 miles. Something to keep in mind. Bigern
