brake on/off - not much change in taillight brightness

Its got to be something to do with the numberplate relocation i would think.
If it was me i would run right through the wiring side of it again.
It must be something you disturbed when you were doing it.
Still think its a bad earth, or something earthing that shouldn't be.
Systematically go through the rear light wiring.
Try running separate earths, with a spare piece of wire you have attached to a good earth point, touch this on any connections that run to earth. And check the brake light.
Its very difficult without being there.

funny, the tailblazer comes with the following warning in the installation manual:

Caution! Harley & Triumph
Sockets of some of these models have been known to be wired wrong. Test to make sure that the barrel of the socket is grounded, and the contacts are wired as shown here.

Then it has a picture of the bottom of the bulb showing two contacts, one labled brake input, the other labeled tail input.

I;ll have to pull it apart and look at it.

I think you might have just found your problem.
Take that makeshift earth wire straight to the barrel of the bulb holder and see if that makes a difference.

I tried to ground the barrel of the bulb to the frame of the bike, no difference.

I think it definitely has to do with the rear pedal. I must've threw it out of whack trying to adjust the pedal height and now the switch that picks up that signal thinks the brake is depressed all the time.

I'm telling you man it's the pressure switch on the rear brake. I had the exact same problem. Take it to the dealer and tell them the pressure switch is sticking and they need to replace it. Takes about an hour.
