better torque if K&N or similiar put in original airbox?

A mechanic told me that retaining the long air inlet going to the underseat airbox retains the torque of the motor whereas putting pods on like the popular K&N pods mod delivers power at the expense of torque.If this is true are there 'Performance'filters to replace the stock one to go under the seat?My Triumph Dealer tells me that using anything but a genuine Triumph air cleaner under the seat creates tune problems.Any one confirm this?The stock air intake certainly sucks in the dust where it is and I cant help but think there would be less dirt in the filter if the intake was further up the front of the bike.I travel on a dirt road occasionally.

Ive got a KN under the seat and it didnt make any differance so dont waste your money.

The mechanic you were talking to needs a physics class.

Torque is the measure of an engines power:

Power = Torque * Angular speed. :wink:


Sorry I'm kind of a physics geek.

I can't figure out why I remember crap like this but I can't find my keys! :lol:

I know what your mechanic is trying to say-but he is refering to intake tract runners tuned for a specific manifold-which we really don't have.

We have an elephant trunk which has several key choke points and forced to breath hot engine and radiator air.

I've gone through every stage of K&N-and trust me when I tell you-adding a K&N under the seat is worthless, gives no noticible power (and on a bike, you should feel at least 2 HP somewhere in the curve.

Also, adding the cone to the inake tract sammiched under the tank doesn't yield much better results-but it is a start-so if you want to remain conservative and your T dealership happy, that may be the route for you.

Ok, so changing the filter brand on the stock set up achieves nothing.Can you fit the K&N Pods under the 'Bearclaw' without losing/impeding their function as I prefer the look of retaining the 'Bearclaw'.It does seem to me you would get cleaner,cooler air from the 'Bearclaw' area rather than under the seat where all the dust colllects from behind the bike!
Is it neccessary to retune the bike after fitting the K&N's under the 'Bearclaw'.......Geez ,your bears must have big mits! :lol:Thanks for the input fellas!

Please research the "How To" section, you will find most of the answers you need. Actually, the 3 K&N's are forced to breat hot air if the BC is kept-but the improvement in power supercedes any loss via heat.
