Basic modifications for performance?

When I purchased the R3, it already had a tune-boy, slip-ons (other thread), and the previous owner said it had a tune up in it.

After skimming a few threads here it appears there are a few more things to do to release the beast. So far I have seen:

1) Get rid of the O2 (I'm assuming this removes automatic adjustments in favor of a well tested tune up)
2) Remove the cat (not sure if I have one)
3) Remove the secondary butterflies
4) K&N filters
5) Put the right tune up in it

Could a veteran possibly offer up their list and see if it makes sense? Am I missing anything? Any gotchas to watch out for? Tune up recommendations?

Sorry for all the questions, but this place seems like the encyclopedia for the R3...minus the index.

Doh, yeah, good point..

2006 R3 - tune boy w/ D&D Slip-Ons. The former owner said he hadn't done anything else but had intended to remove the O2 and secondary butterflies.

I've done nothing but put a rear tire on it while I decide whether or not to keep it..well..it has grown on me (and my wife) and it is definitely staying which means I have to go do some modifications. (It's an illness, really...)
 
Well first of all.. TuneBoy is software on a laptop or computer used to modifify the tune in your bike's ECU. TuneBoy is not something installed on your bike. Hopefully you were given the TuneBoy software when you purchased the bike, so you can load different tunes as needed when you make intake/exhaust changes.

If you have the D&D slip on, then you don't have a cat..

Triple K&N's sure make it easier to work on by eliminating most of the intake duct work and allow some easier breathing. They do tend to produce a chirping sound when opening up the throttle though that can be annoying. I haven't went that route yet, but it sure does look good with a trimmed bear claw..

The D&D slip on is a mild performance muffler. I don't know if you really need to remove the O2 sensor with that set up or not..

I currently run Jardines, a PowerCommander 3, no O2 sensor and a K&N drop-in air filter. My last dyno run was 139.8 HP and 142 lbs/ft of torque. Most people with triple K&N's and a similar exhaust add about 10 more each to those numbers. I run a Power Commander because most dyno shops are already familiar with it.
 
TxRider has it spot on. The only thing I would add is that you should have been given a TuneBoy cable to connect a computer to your bike along with the code that is specific to your bike so that you can change tunes as needed and diagnose problems, synchronise the throttles etc. The software is free to download.
 

Apart from what has been mentioned before you can get a power commander five also know as a PCV with auto tune while the website will tell you that they are only for 09 onwards the thing is it does fit all models all the way back to 04 if you go that route I have a map I put together that will get the best out of the girl regardless of what you do to the exhaust air filters etc, your tune boy moded ECU will already taken care of the ignition tables and the PCV with AT will adjust your bikes fueling as you ride and you don't need to take it to a dyno. As far as air filters go you will get a definite gain in HP going to the Triples with your secondary's removed the chirping mentioned before ocours due to vacuum variances and I found by having the larger K&N RX 4040s and the PCV with At has almost completely feminised that but the be warned the 4040's stick out a far bit and you can not fit them inside the bearclaw like the commonly used K&N 2780's, as I said if you are tempted to go for the PCV with AT send your email adress in a pm and I will send you a killer map for it
 
Oh and if ordering it on line you will need to tell the website you own a 09 otherwise it will direct you to the PC3
 
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the GIPro. It is by far the best bang for the buck of anything you can do to help the get-up-and-go. For a measly 125 bucks It will release the artificially harnessed horses that you have available in low second and third. (Not to mention you also get a gear indicator out of the deal) When you put one on, BE CAREFUL because when you have it set on setting 3, all of the available ponies will try to get out of the barn resulting in the rear tire breaking loose or the front wheel going skyward.
 
Gipro is great I have it and love it . The same results can be achieved with the ignition tables through tune ecu though minus the cool gear indicator. I do however think the results of Gipro atre get somewhat exaggerated on this forum alot . The difference is obviouse but I was a bit disappointed after reading the reviews on here lol. Agreed though best bang for buck .

It is only $20 for the cable to use the freeware TuneECU and do you REALY NEED a GEAR indicator
