Should look at Hegels R3.. rivoted metal look, STUNNING paint job.

I had thought about going with bare metal flames when I had mine painted.. You can also sand it so the 'grain' runs which ever way you want.. or use a tennis ball on a drill and make swirls in the metal that look pretty cool.. I've seen several that were done bare metal with clear coat, with no rust problems. There is a Harley in our work parking lot that is all bare metal with clear coat to protect it..

I hadn't heard of the tennis ball trick.
