When I removed the tank last time I was also changing the spark plugs and fuel filter, so I didn't even think about the possibility of not having to remove it for just the air filter.
The manual does call for removing the tank for this procedure, but you've done it without so, obviously, it is possible. I would be concerned about stressing that fuel line connection, which is plastic. But if you're careful, might be the way to go.
I have all necessary parts on the way, but I'll take your advice once they arrive and see if I can do it without removing the tank all the way.
