I would make every effort to hit Sedona up. It's only about 2 to 2.5 hours north of Phoenix, and is amazing! Truth be told, and nothing against the Grand Canyon as it is a must see for everybody, but I feel Sedona is a bit more engaing than the Grand Canyon because in Sedona you're actually riding through the red rock formations and scenery, whereas in the GC, once you get to the big hole so to speak you just drive around the rim. Both are awesome places and you could do both if you wanted. Have fun!

In my opinion, from a guy who lives 3 hours from Kingman in CA and rides all over AZ, I would stay south to be safe. Tombstone is a hoot. The BEST time to do the north areas is in May. April when the Laughlin run occurs there are still too many bugs. It's warm, but if you wait until May, the bugs are going away and the weather is just right for bikes. Just my two cents.

i am with most everyone else up north can be still cold with snow on the ground there is plenty riding country south i do remember a rocket rider from scottsdale ? area maybe he will check in payson area is nice but high in elevation still winter there although they have arizona bike week in april i think spring does come quick my son and i went to bike week 2 years ago nice and warm in pheonix but rode in winter storm to get back home there is always yuma/tombstone etc. in the south side grand canyon would be nice if the conditions allow it along with monument valley have fun be carefull let us know how it goes

The 2 hours is up I17 which is not a bad ride but if you have more time take 60 to Wickenburg than 89 thru Prescott to Sedona. ITs about a 4 hour ride mostly 2 lanes but very nice.

on your way to tombstone make a stop in Patagonia and explore the roads around the ranches on the upper meadows to the east ..

Arizona

Your right about the heated cloths, I don't trust anybodys weather enough to leave it behind. Will be in Pheonix Feb14 and leaving Feb 19. There's 2 of us with no plans, no reservations, and sometimes, no idea. But we do like to ride.

North of phoenix is a small town of camp verde. there is a casino nice place to stay. you can go east on 260 for a while and it hits 87
then you could go south to payson its a down hill grade with lots of curves. its on the south lower rim and it gets warmer in payson.
if you turn left (north) you will be riding on the north rim and it will be cold, but beautiful. pine trees, meadows, and lake mormon&lake mary. lake mary road comes out at flagstaff close to the town of williams. watch out for elk!
this is my first post i hope its done right. herman
ps you might want to use google maps and it will show the roads i am talking about

And if you do go to Tombstone, Make sure you go down to Benson the new county seat. Interesting town. Then on the way back go over to the town of Fort Huachuca where the Army base is. That's were the Buffalo Soldiers were stationed. The Town is a cool little town to get lunch in. Then a quick ride back to Tombstone. Tombstone to Benson through Fort Huachuca back to Tombstone is an easy day ride.
